The Birth of an Icon

In the early days of developing their "Boss" 6.2-liter V-8 engine, Ford's chief engine engineer Les Ryder set his sights on an ambitious goal: 7000 RPM, 700 horsepower, and 7 liters. Dubbed the Triple Seven, it's a legendary what-if that had the potential to revolutionize car culture forever. While it never saw mass production, a secretive team managed to coax the engine into running an eight-second quarter-mile just a few years ago.

The truck-loving fans of Ford were clamoring for a new engine to replace the 460-cubic-inch big block after its demise. The Modular engines were doing fine in other vehicles such as the Mustang, Crown Victoria, and F-series trucks, but lacked the low-end torque compared to bigger V-8s from competitors like Chevy and Dodge. Knowing this, Ford engineers developed the Boss 6.2-liter engine in 2005. With wider bore spacing, it promised to provide much-needed lung capacity for the brand.

Seeing Something More Than Utilitarian

Despite its impressive design, the Boss 6.2-liter ended up being used primarily in utilitarian pickup trucks - but imagine if Ford had pursued the Triple Seven program instead! With its production-intent 16-valve configuration smashing through horsepower and RPM goals with ease, and even flirting with becoming a four-valve-per-cylinder giant-killer, the Triple Seven was poised to take the automotive world by storm under the guidance of Don Bowles, Sr., Ford Racing, and Roush.

When drag racer Don Bowles, Sr. returned to the strip after a long retirement, he turned to Ford's deep involvement in the straight-line scene for help. His search for a new engine program brought him to Les Ryder, who worked in the awe-inspiring Mahogany Row at Ford's Engineering Labs - an opulent space fit for automotive royalty. Together, they set out to push the boundaries of what was possible and create the Triple Seven engine, designed to reach 7000 rpm, 700 hp, and 7 liters.

With Ryder's prototyping resources, they poured a custom block and forged crankshaft, increasing stroke to give the team the magical 427 cu-in (7-liter) figure. These innovative design changes allowed for a larger bore spacing, which enabled the use of bigger pistons and valves - giving the Triple Seven enough airflow to meet Ford's goals and become a true legend in the racing world.

Ford Megapowers

Enter Jack Roush and his team at Roush Performance, who quickly became fast friends with Bowles and his family. They spent countless hours tinkering with the engine, swapping camshafts and carburetors until they had pushed the Super Stock combo to its absolute limit. And despite setbacks and challenges along the way, they never gave up - always pushing for that extra 20 horsepower on the dyno.

As Roush's team worked tirelessly to fine-tune the valvetrain and camshaft combination, they encountered numerous challenges - from valve clearance issues to overheating valves and springs. But with each setback, they pushed harder and found innovative solutions, like adding bronze valve guides to absorb heat and modifying the induction system to accommodate a Kinsler individual throttle-body setup in a massive plenum box.

With every improvement, the Triple Seven rose to new heights - surpassing 700 hp at just 7000 rpm and hitting a staggering 850 hp as revs rose beyond 8000 rpm. And as the dyno sheets kept rolling in, it became increasingly clear that Ford, Roush, and Bowles, Sr. had underestimated the Boss platform's true potential.

A New Life for a Mundane Pony

Enter Coal Digger VI. Coal Digger VI began life as a 2005 Ford Mustang, but Don Bowles, Sr. and his team quickly transformed it into a powerhouse that would dominate the drag strip. With a Roush Stage 3 aero kit, carbon-fiber fenders, and a stout four-link suspension, the Coal Digger VI was a force to be reckoned with. And when Bowles, Sr.'s team replaced the Mustang's original gearbox with a sequentially-shifted G-Force GF-5R, there was no stopping this yellow-clad race car from tearing up the track.

But the real secret behind the Coal Digger VI's success was the Triple Seven engine - a true masterpiece of engineering that had never been approved for production use. With its exact details kept under lock and key, Bowles, Sr.'s team preferred Open Comp's "run what you brung" approach, which allowed them to gather valuable track-side data in the demanding context of bracket racing.

And so, they began testing the Triple Seven's durability and consistency at Michigan's Milan Dragway before entering NMRA Open Comp in 2006. With each race, the Coal Digger VI proved itself to be a true contender - a car that could go the distance and come out on top.

Proving it was no mere dyno queen, the Triple Seven knocked down the 9-second ladder with ease, eventually running consistently in the 9.0-second range. But that was just the beginning - months later, at New Jersey's Atco Dragway, it shattered all expectations by breaking the 8-second barrier. And while the other guy red-lit on the first round, Don Bowles, Sr. stayed on it and recorded a blistering 8.993-second pass that left everyone speechless.

With its impressive trap speed of 152 mph, the Triple Seven had proven itself to be a true performance car engine - one that could take on even the toughest competition and come out on top. And as the 2007 NMRA season drew to a close, the Triple Seven's dead-nuts reliability and sheer power helped Don Bowles, Sr. capture three event wins and finish second in points.

What If?

Despite its incredible power and performance, the Triple Seven engine was ultimately replaced by an ex-NASCAR Ford D3 mill at the end of the season. But while it was a sensible move for Don Bowles Racing, who needed a readily available surplus engine, it signaled the end of the road for the Triple Seven's development.

And yet, even as the Coyote engine took center stage with its game-changing horsepower injection, there were those who still couldn't help but wonder what might have been. What if the Mustang had packed a milder version of the Triple Seven - even at the Raptor's 6.2-liter displacement? With its brute-force response and incredible performance potential, it could have revolutionized the high-horsepower pony car game and given General Motors and Dodge a run for its money.

Sadly, the Triple Seven will likely never return, but its legacy lives on - inspiring future generations of racing legends to push beyond the limits of what's possible.
