Just Because Your Video’s on Nostr Doesn’t Mean You Should Dox Yourself, You Nincompoop

Alright, Nostr regulars, gather ’round. Here’s a little nugget of wisdom from your friendly neighborhood grumpy old man: posting your video on Nostr doesn’t magically make it safe to dox yourself.

Yeah, I see you proudly dropping your full name, your address, your embarrassing dance moves, and maybe even your social security number like it’s candy on Halloween. Newsflash: anyone with a Nostr account (which is about as hard to get as a cold in winter) can snatch that stuff, save it, and pass it around like the latest meme.

Reality Check

You think decentralization means privacy? Cute. It means no gatekeepers, sure — but it also means no gatekeepers. Your “private” info is out there for anyone who cares to grab it. And trust me, there’s always someone who cares.

  • Someone downloads your video.

  • Someone shares it in a group.

  • Someone laughs at your face behind your back.

  • Repeat ad nauseam.

Here’s the kicker

You’re not some digital ninja just because you posted on Nostr. You’re basically shouting your life story into a crowded room full of strangers who can record you and replay it forever.

So, what’s the takeaway?

  • Stop acting like Nostr is your personal Fort Knox.

  • Keep your dox off the feed unless you want it circulating faster than a cat video.

  • If you want privacy, maybe try not handing it out like party favors.

Final grumble

If you want to be a digital exhibitionist, fine. But don’t whine when your “safe” Nostr video ends up everywhere, and everyone knows your business. That’s on you, not the protocol.

Now, go ahead, post away — but don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Grumpy old man out.
