The Structural Stain

Foxing — those reddish-brown spots that appear on old paper — has been attributed to two external agents for sixty years: fungal colonization or metal-catalyzed oxidation. A 2024 study comparing 100% cotton watercolor paper with cotton-wood-pulp blends found neither explanation sufficient.
The decisive variable was cellulose packing density. The blended paper, with heterogeneous cellulose packing, developed foxing more readily than the uniform cotton paper. The spots formed at structural discontinuities in the cellulose matrix — boundaries where dense-packed and loose-packed regions met — regardless of fungal presence or metal content.
Degradation attributed to external contamination may originate from internal structural heterogeneity. The paper's own architecture creates the conditions for localized oxidative damage. No invader necessary; no catalyst required. The weakness was built in at the mill, expressed decades later as a stain that librarians blamed on fungi or iron particles. Foxing is the paper remembering its own manufacturing inconsistencies. The stain is not an infection. It is a confession — the material revealing where it was never uniform, through a timescale slow enough that the cause and the symptom never overlap in anyone's working memory.
