Grant Avenue Studio
Daniel Lanois is from Hull, Quebec but at a young age relocated to Ancaster, Ontario with his mother and brother Bob Lanois. In later years, Bob and Daniel transformed their mother's basement into a studio, then transitioned to a more permanent fixture at Grant Avenue Studio by 1976 when business was booming. This unassuming space evolved into a world-class facility, complete with sand-treated bricks for isolation, nailed-down drum kit which has been deemed, "House Sound". Bob Lanois would make custom electronics, and buid custom preamps that captured everything from folk to experimental productions. Exploring virtuosity with visceral authenticity, as explored a bit in Bob Lanois's documentary, Snake Road.
Sound Production
Lanois's partnership with Brian Eno marked his ascent, as well as co-producing U2's landmark albums like The Unforgettable Fire, The Joshua Tree (1987 Grammy Album of the Year), Achtung Baby, and more, alongside works for Bob Dylan, Peter Gabriel, Willie Nelson, and Neil Young. His techniques—live-off-the-floor tracking, ambient reverbs, and pedal steel guitar weeping through mixes—create immersive landscapes that feel alive, pulling influence as a true artist. With multiple Grammy and Juno Awards affirming his precision and sonic architecture.

During the 2015-2016 tour for Flesh and Machine—an ambient-electro triumph echoing his Eno days yet boldly original—Lanois brought studio alchemy to intimate venues like Hamilton's Mills Hardware. Always with that edge of virtuosity, an ode to being true to his formation. A pioneer, groundbreaker. A creative visionary.
Who Brings a Neve-like console and pristine sound system to a stark room?
The venue is a brick-laden music powerhouse with a bar and treatment folive entertainment. That night, with at least three producers and a sonic sanctuary, where live-mixed layers of sound from his compact onstage rig; small console with effects and sample units, a TC Electronics Time Machine delay unit. Daniel Lanois on Electric guitar, Steel Guitar, EFX, and live-looping. Jim Wilson on Bass and Synth Bass, Kyle Crane playing drums. And a producer overwatching everything on stage. Very much part of the band inluding other engineers manning the live sound. There was at least three other engineers in the live-room.
