Listening to Matt Hill painfully explain that the transition of StartOS from closed source to FOSS through four progressive licenses was fully intentional, it struck me
He shouldn't need to do that
Sometimes freedom & privacy tech plebs could be more trusting
Many have been burnt by some form of centralized power, sometimes many times, and I totally get that, I'm like that myself
But to live as sovereign individuals in communities, to be supported by tech developers, that distrust needs to be dialled down somehow
And I'm not saying it's a big problem on Nostr, the conversation is mostly healthy, just sometimes there's a bit of back biting and some pale echoes of the mass insanity on Xitter
Put another way
Self sovereign individuals should have no problem trusting the motives of ppl who have no power over them
It costs nothing and has benefits
Self sovereignty should be an expression of confidence
Contrast that with the conversation on Xitter
Ppl run around thinking that seeing psyops everywhere means that they are "uncontrollable"
In reality they are scared, isolated, divorced from reality and completely controlled by sociopaths
That is mostly the description of a cult
And that's why I'm opposed to algorithmic feeds
Back to Matt Hill
Start9 produce open source, auditable software that makes data sovereignty more accessible
For free
Their actions merit full trust
They shouldn't need, or feel the need, to counter doubts over their motivation
And again it's not a widespread problem on Nostr
Just an occasional spanner in the works, a bit of friction to forming structures to get shit done
But never mind all that
It's a good interview
The next StartOS release will support self-hosted app stores
And that's pretty cool
