On courage, colonización, and why one name can't be said on the merits.
They called us pussies.
Eric Weinstein went on air and decided that Argentines and Australians lack a spine. I happen to be both — an Argentine-Australian who has lived in, and loved, both countries. So allow me to answer with the one thing the professional truth-teller kept stepping around: precision.
Courage is not a podcast take
Courage is not a hot opinion recorded in a soundproofed studio between ad reads. Ask an Argentine what courage actually costs. It is living through serial sovereign default, the corralito that locked your savings behind a bank's doors, and inflation that ate your wages while you slept — and then, against all of it, learning to hold your own keys. Ask an Argentinian or an Australian staring down a fresh wave of transaction-surveillance rules and stacking sats anyway.
We did not read about monetary collapse in a book. We survived it. Some of us are only now watching the rest of the world sound out the word "debasement" as though it were a discovery.
So spare us the lecture Mate!
The tell
Here is the part worth slowing down on. When Santiago raised Satoshi, Eric did not engage it. He asked Santi to set the question aside — for the sake of their friendship.
Sit with that. Here is a managing director of Thiel Capital — Peter Thiel's personal investment firm — and of every subject on the table, the one he cannot meet on the merits is the name Satoshi. Not refute. Not debate. Wave away, gently, between friends.
A real thesis survives the question. It welcomes it. That this one had to be excused "as friends" is not a footnote. It is the answer. The evasion arrives at the precise moment the conversation touches the only money on Earth the state cannot print, edit, freeze, or seize — the one tool that dissolves the very leverage that funds the studios, the firms, the "experts."
Meanwhile, in Buenos Aires
This is not a coincidence of acquaintances. The man waving away Satoshi draws his title from Thiel Capital. So watch what his principal does with his freedom.
Peter Thiel did not flee America. His empire stayed exactly where it is. What he did was buy a mansion in Barrio Parque, sit down with President Milei, bring Palantir along for the ride, and let the press fill with talk of Argentine citizenship. His early SpaceX bet — roughly $600 million — just printed north of $50 billion on the IPO. That is the scale of the capital now circling the Southern Cone, looking for a country to land in.
Ours.
They will sell it to you in the usual vocabulary: efficiency, innovation, modernisation, partnership. But there is an older, more honest word for a foreign black box that arrives to harvest your data, buy your land, and befriend your president. In Spanish we call it colonización. It does not become liberation just because the coloniser can quote Hayek.
It was never "ET phone home"
This is the inversion the room keeps missing. The fantasy on offer — from the contrarians, the techno-optimists, the men with bunkers in the south — is essentially ET phone home. Sit tight. A smarter, richer, more advanced intelligence is coming to save you. Be patient, be grateful, and don't ask too many questions.
But the signal already arrived. It arrived in 2008, in nine pages, from a name no one will say out loud. Satoshi cometh — past tense. The rescue we were told to wait for has been sitting in plain sight for sixteen years, and it asks no one's permission.
The answer to capture was never a kinder landlord. Not a better billionaire, not a friendlier surveillance contractor, not a more articulate podcaster — and certainly not the people drawing a salary from the men buying the country. The answer is to stop needing a landlord at all.
So
Fix the money. Hold your keys. Run your own node. Verify, don't trust — least of all the men who flinch at a name and call it friendship.
And to the billionaires touching down in Buenos Aires with a black box in one hand and a smile in the other: Not E.T. Phone Home but Yanqui, go home.
