I am a firm believer that low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) eating is important for overall health in most individuals. Some people have specific ways of eating that they adopt for social/religious reasons or just personal preference. Vegans are one particular population that have restrictive challenges when considering a low-carbohydrate, high-fat way of eating. See tips below.
LCHF DIET WITH VEGANISM
Prioritize protein for essential amino acids. Consider: Lupini beans, lentils, black beans, pinto beans, chickpeas, garbanzo beans, green peas, soy beans, Tempe, Natto, edamame beans, tofu, hemp seeds, peanut butter, almond butter, almonds, sunflower seed butter, tahini.
Eat healthy fats including: olive oil, avocado oil, macadamia nut oil, coconut oil, cream. Also, cocoa butter.
Choose nutrient dense plants: hemp seeds (zinc and omega-3 fatty acids), sesame seeds (calcium, iron, and zinc), spinach (calcium, iron, and zinc)
Avoid grains of all types!
Avoid bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, cereal, sugar-containing drinks, sugar-containing foods!
Do not forget vitamin B12, vitamin D3, calcium, iron, zinc, and omega 3 fatty acid supplements.
