Simplest Healthy Diet Basics for Children

Diet for healthy children

While I am a fully licensed physician in Kansas, this communication does not constitute personal medical advice or establish a physician-patient relationship. See your own physician to discuss your particular diagnosis and treatment

We are facing an epidemic of metabolic health disorders such as obesity, diabetes mellitus type 2, fatty liver disease, hypertension, and many others. Sometimes, these conditions even begin in utero. I am a firm believer that early intervention is the best strategy to delay or prevent these metabolic health disorders.

Parenting can be challenging. I was not given an instructional manual to help me raise my own kids. I do want to empower my patients to guide their children wisely, though. Sometimes, I am guilty of over-complicating the issues. Hopefully, these simple recommendations can serve as your guide to raising healthy children.

This list of healthy diet basics for children was compiled by a practicing nutritionist:

Eat real food.

Avoid processed food: things in a box, soda, electrolyte drinks, candy, etc.

Avoid added sugar.

Focus on meat, seafood, chicken, eggs, full cream dairy, brightly colored vegetables, nuts, seeds, and added fats.

Use grains very rarely.

Meal frequency: 3 meals daily, up to 2 snacks. If not hungry, don't eat.

Some added salt is perfectly fine.

I hope this information helps you and your loved ones!
