In this video, I introduce the topic of the endothelial glycocalyx. I give a definition and localize this to the relevant anatomy. I discuss the myriad functions of the endothelial glycocalyx. I discuss how the glycocalyx is effected by glucose (sugar). I pose the thought that vascular disease may just be a presentation of diabetes. I discuss atherosclerosis and how inflammation and the immune system contributes to this process. I briefly discuss mast cells and their role in atherosclerosis. I discuss interventions to improve endothelial glycocalyx function and hopefully delay hypertension and cardiovascular disease onset.
