It’s been a while since I last wrote an article, and it’s not just because of vacation. I read The Obesity Code by Jason Fung and finally felt a full picture of obesity develop in my mind. I just didn’t want to write about it before verifying my theory on myself. Basically, I started practicing intermittent fasting by doing OMAD (one meal a day) and longer fasts during the weekend. So far, I lost my vacation fat (blame carb indulgence for that) and even dipped below my former weight plateau, but it’s still too early to make a definitive conclusion. I also started exercising and I feel in great physical shape, probably the best I felt since… elementary school? I was not an athletic kid…
With that out of the way, today I want to write about my complete disillusionment with the medical system. I am about 80% through a book called ‘Doctoring Data’ by Malcolm Kendrick. This was probably the toughest book to read this year and something as close to a horror story as a book about medical research can get. My conclusion from the book is that basically we are all screwed. Medical science is completely corrupt, and I don’t see how it can be fixed.
The author even says so, but says a glimmer of hope remains in the fact that at least the data from medical research papers, despite being obfuscated and manipulated, are still true. This is probably due to the fact that researchers still can’t legally outright lie, they are just trained experts in the art of statistical manipulation, employed by wealthy and ruthless corporate employers.
The entire medical field has been compromised by corporate interest. Big pharmaceutical companies are funding most medical research and seminars, they are funding various medical charities (which in turn fund the researchers) and even patient advocacy groups, with the ruthless goal of selling more drugs and expanding the marketability of their drugs. Lobbying groups are even advising government about policy these days…
It’s brilliant, isn’t it? Fund the people who make guidelines doctors must follow, design favorable research for diseases you made up, then watch people get sicker so you can sell more drugs that address the symptoms and ignore the cause. I dare you to think of a better revenue stream… some narco bosses would probably like to know.
As an example of this practice, primary prevention of cardiovascular disease with statins is contraindicated in my opinion (primary means that a heart attack has not happened yet). They prolong life when taken for primary prevention for 3-4 days, yet have dangerous side-effects that are probably being underreported. Despite these facts, a doctor that doesn’t prescribe statins for primary preventions, or decides to deprescribe, can lose his medical license if reported to the national regulatory medical body. Statins lower LDL cholesterol, but the effect on mortality is basically nil.
So, what can I tell you, dear readers? I can tell you not to take the opinion of your doctor too seriously when talking about preventive medicine. This field has been completely corrupted and you should always take preventive medical advice with a big grain of salt. “Statins decrease heart attack risks by 46%” is a technically true statement, but in actual reality the absolute risk reduction is negligible. There are probably dozens of examples, but I am mentioning statins specifically because they are probably the most abused and overprescribed medication today.
Modern medicine is great for dealing with acute conditions. Please, take your antibiotic and analgesic if prescribed. Go to hospital when in distress, or in pain, and listen to the surgeon when he says you need an urgent operation. We can transplant acellular hearts, for christ sake, we can inject pancreatic tissue into your veins for achieving a diabetes cure (still being researched) and we can treat almost any infectious disease out there.
Modern medicine, however, utterly fails at dealing with the underlying cause of most modern disease. Yes, we can treat the consequences of diabetes and heart disease, but why amputate a leg if it can be saved? The reason is that preventing modern disease is cheaper, doesn’t rely on expensive drugs and is basically about reducing consumerism and lowering time preference.
To achieve metabolic health you need to: 1) eat less carbohydrates, 2) eat more animal fat, 3) eat more animal protein, 4) not eat processed food, 5) not consume vegetable oils, and ideally 6) regularly fast and 7) exercise. You will become healthier, spend less on consumption, and avoid expensive medical bills in the future. That’s it. However will Merck survive? Think of poor Nestle and Coca-Cola, who will feed their CEOs?
When a doctor gives you medical advice, always verify. Bitcoin teaches us this. We live in a time where ‘trusting the experts’ is a foolish choice. For the first time in history, you can verify the information given to you by experts. When it comes to health, always verify.
I don’t think this advice will reach a lot of people. In fact, I think most people will continue to be fooled by the medical-pharmaceutical complex until the system collapses. There is simply not enough money in the world to cover treatment of chronic metabolic disease. The state will keep doing deficit spending, and eventually it will collapse in glorious hyperinflation.
Buy bitcoin, hold bitcoin. The best revolution is to simply opt out. To be a sovereign individual, you need to take your health into your own hands.
