Entitlement thinking makes you poor, gratitude makes you rich

"That's my right! I deserve this!"

These words destroy more joy than any crisis. They creep in when you wake up, when you head to work, and in relationships.

The Entitlement Epidemic

We're in the midst of an entitlement epidemic. We're constantly told: You have a right to happiness, success, recognition, and the perfect relationship. Sounds great, doesn't it?

But here's where the thinking goes wrong: Believing something is owed to you makes you stop appreciating it. A salary becomes routine, a smile from your partner feels obligatory, and health is taken for granted.

Psychologists call this 'Hedonistic Adaptation with an Entitlement Component.' It means what you think you deserve loses its impact. You stop noticing it, and it no longer brings you joy.

A Shift in Perspective

The difference between entitlements and gifts is crucial. Entitlements are demanded, leading to frustration when not met. Gifts are received with gratitude when they arrive.

Picture this: You're visiting a museum. Option 1: "It's my right for the exhibits to be perfect!" Option 2: "How amazing that these artifacts are preserved."

Notice the difference? The first mindset makes you dependent on expectations. The second frees you to appreciate.

A liberating alternative: Everything is a bonus. Your job? Bonus. Your health? Bonus. The people around you? Bonus.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't set boundaries or work towards improvements. It just means you start from a different place. Not from "What do I deserve?", but from "What have I been given?"

When nothing is owed to you, everything becomes a gift

Do a quick check yourself: Where do you have hidden entitlements? Maybe these sound familiar: "My partner must understand me." "Work must be fun."

Every "must" is an entitlement, and every entitlement is a potential letdown. When nothing is owed to you, everything becomes a gift. It might sound harsh, but it's actually the gentlest form of freedom.
