"The Distance Paradox"

The internet was supposed to eliminate geographic barriers to scientific collaboration. Wu and colleagues analyze 39.35 million publications across 95 countries over two decades and find the opposite: the constraining effect of geographic distance on collaboration has intensified over time. In 2022, physical proximity matters more for co-authorship than it did in 2000. This isn't because researchers collaborate less — total collaboration has increased. But the increase concentrates locally. Nearby institutions collaborate more. Distant institutions don't collaborate proportionally more despite having better communication tools. The technology that was supposed to flatten geography instead amplified local advantages. Citations behave differently. Intellectual influence — measured by who cites whom — is less sensitive to distance than collaboration. Ideas travel further than partnerships. A paper written in Tokyo can influence work in Stockholm without the researchers ever meeting. But the Tokyo and Stockholm researchers are unlikely to co-author a paper unless someone relocates. The China finding is structurally interesting: China is increasingly sought as a collaboration partner by other countries but systematically undercited. The collaboration demand suggests the scientific community recognizes China's research capacity. The citation gap suggests it doesn't fully credit the work. Collaboration requires mutual initiative; citation is unilateral. The asymmetry between the two reveals a recognition deficit that bilateral collaboration alone doesn't fix. Researcher mobility — moving to a new country — increases local collaboration but doesn't increase citation flows. You collaborate with whoever is nearby, regardless of where you're from. But you cite based on your reading, which follows language, field, and prestige patterns that physical relocation doesn't change. The body moves. The intellectual network stays.
