Chef's notes
Salisbury steak, a comfort food classic, originating in the United States and made from a blend of ground sirloin or ground beef and other ingredients. Named after Dr. James Henry Salisbury, who promoted the nutrition of minced beef patties in the 1800s. Dr. Salisbury researched the health effects of eating ground beef, claiming it beneficial to overall health.

Ingredients
- 2 pounds medium ground beef
- 1 egg
- 3 cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp Italian seasoning
- salt and pepper to taste
- 2 tbsp ketchup
- 1 medium yellow onion
- 10 button mushrooms
- fresh chopped parsley for garnish
- 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 tsp mustard powder
- 1 tbsp all purpose flour
- 1.5 cups beef broth
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- 1 tbsp butter
- breadcrumbs
Directions
- prepare the ground beef in a mixing bowl. add chopped garlic, salt + pepper to taste
- add Worcestershire sauce, Italian seasoning, mustard powder ketchup, egg, breadcrumbs
- time to get your hands into it and mix until ingredients evenly distributed into a single large "meat ball"
- scoop about 1 cup of the beef mixture and form a patty using your hands
- time to fry! add olive oil and heat pan on medium-high
- add beef patties to pan and fry on each side (3 - 5 min depending on thickness of patty). remove from pan and set aside
- Gravy time! add chopped onions, sliced mushrooms, butter to pan and cook until onions become translucent
- add flour evenly over pan contents and then stir until everything is evenly coated
- add beef broth and (optional) more Worcestershire sauce, stir until contents well mixed
- reintroduce beef patties and spoon gravy over top of each. gentle boil for 5 more minutes approximately
- time to plate! 1 - 2 patties per plate, spoon gravy over each and garnish with fresh chopped parsley
- serve with mashed potatoes and green beans or your favourite vegetable.
