Mining Sovereignty

Every civilization is, at its core, an energy conversion system. Societies rise in proportion to their ability to capture, store, transport, and productively deploy energy. This is why the history of civilization is, in many respects, the history of energy. Human progress can be traced through successive leaps in our ability to command greater quantities of power, from fire to animal labour, from water wheels to steam engines, from coal to oil, from electricity to nuclear energy. Every major economic revolution has been preceded by an energy revolution. Prosperity follows abundance and stagnation follows scarcity. Energy poverty has never liberated anyone. It has only made populations poorer, weaker, and more dependent. Energy is the one input that every other form of national power depends on from food production, to manufacturing, defense, even the ability to process information at scale. A nation that cannot generate its own power cannot, in any meaningful sense, set its own terms. In other words, Without energy, there is no economy and ultimately no sovereignty. Since energy is the bedrock of all production, and money is the unit that prices and allocates energy, then whoever sits at the intersection of energy financing and currency issuance holds something closer to civilizational leverage than mere market power. For a long time Bitcoin mining was demonized and framed as a civilizational threat, a boiling-the-oceans indulgence for libertarian cranks. Interestingly, by 2024, the same institutions that were wailing about Bitcoin mining’s energy consumption, were breaking ground on gigawatt-scale AI data centers, quietly reversing their original positions on climate change. The physics never changed, but the politics definitely did. What really changed was who controlled the compute, and that was always the actual variable being managed. The ghouls in charge never hated Bitcoin mining for the environment. That was always a convenient fiction which was used to conceal something far more sinister. They hated it because it exposed the architecture of control that has kept entire continents in perpetual dependency. Where AI data centers are now the epitome of centralized hash power, Bitcoin mining is the antithesis of this. It became the crack in the dam that proved that energy production could be profitable, decentralized, and sovereign; that a village in Zambia or a province in Argentina could bootstrap its own grid without an IMF structural adjustment program. It proved that money and energy are two sides of the same coin, and that whoever mints both controls their own destiny. Thus sovereignty over one's own energy production, is a bypass around the entire postwar architecture of conditional development finance. It is not unreasonable to ask whether decades of development lending that left recipient nations energy-poor and dollar-indebted simultaneously was pure incompetence, or whether incompetence and incentive occasionally point in the same direction. After all, multilateral lenders don't need a conspiracy to prefer clients who stay clients. Institutions optimize, consciously or not, for their own continuity. The IMF and World Bank did not simply lend money to the developing world, but they lent money in with conditions that included currency devaluations, austerity, privatization of state utilities, often on terms that left recipient nations perpetually short of the one thing they needed to actually industrialize; cheap, abundant, dispatchable power, as no nation has ever become prosperous by making energy more expensive, less reliable, or more difficult to access. Bitcoin mining, thus creates demand for energy in places where the development apparatus has ensured there is none. The miner does not just acquire bitcoin, but he also acquires infrastructure. He becomes a power producer in a world that has conspired to keep him powerless. The ongoing war in Iran demonstrated the strategic vulnerability of energy markets. Whenever war threatens major oil-producing regions or critical shipping lanes, global energy prices respond almost instantly. Nations dependent on imported fuel suddenly face higher transportation costs, more expensive electricity, rising inflation, and mounting fiscal pressure. Even countries geographically distant from the conflict feel its effects because modern economies are tightly interconnected through global energy markets. Thus energy abundance is not a luxury but it's the foundation of all human action. Any country that cannot produce sufficient energy at home inevitably surrenders part of its sovereignty to events beyond their control. Its economy becomes exposed to geopolitical shocks, shipping disruptions, sanctions, and diplomatic crises over which it has little influence. Energy sovereignty, therefore, is not simply about keeping the lights on, but also about preserving strategic autonomy. A nation that controls its own generation controls its own destiny in a crisis; a person who converts his own energy into his own money controls his own privacy in an economy built to strip it away by default. The Iran war, once again, exemplifies what happens to nations that outsource the first kind of sovereignty. The same principle applies at the level of the individual, as the centralized KYC exchange shows what happens to individuals who outsource the second. A household capable of generating its own electricity through solar, micro-hydro, wind, or other distributed energy systems enjoys a degree of independence unavailable to those entirely reliant upon the power grid. That independence becomes even more meaningful when paired with Bitcoin mining, but the bigger play for the individual is privacy. The KYC regime is the ultimate tyranny of the digital age. Your bitcoin is not yours if someone else controls the on-ramp. Mining bypasses this entirely. As a pseudonymous monetary system Bitcoin was designed to be acquired through mining and P2P transactions, the centralized exchange apparatus was an anomaly that brought convenience but morphed into a chokepoint. As we have started to see more and more solo blocks being found by Solo miners, it is my hope that this trend continues to unfold as that's one of the keys necessary for maintaining Bitcoin's decentralization in a world where most listed mining companies are more loyal to their boards. This isn't a criticism but an objective reality that puts the network at odds when the interests of shareholders and that of the network inevitably clash. About two weeks ago Rigly, the hashrate marketplace, hit a major milestone when they found their first block during one of their block parties. While this didn't happen overnight, this was a feather in the hat of solo miners. The point is that every time a solo block is found it becomes a signal of what's possible and what's at stake. When an individual mines bitcoin, newly issued coins are earned through the expenditure of computational work rather than purchased through identity-linked financial institutions. Granted, mining is not a guarantee of anonymity and participants must still comply with applicable laws, it greatly reduces reliance on custodial acquisition methods that routinely collect extensive personal information. This is why the ghouls hate it A sovereign individual is not merely someone who owns bitcoin, but a truly sovereign individual increasingly seeks to control the means through which that bitcoin is acquired, secured, and defended. Self-custody protects ownership, home mining strengthens participation and local energy production reinforces both. The Kardashev scale is a mirror that shows who commands the joules. A Type I civilization commands the energy of its planet. A Type 0 civilization, where we currently languish, commands only what it is permitted to command by those who control the money, the grid, and the narrative. Progress is therefore measured not by consuming less, but by directing more energy toward productive ends. Modern political discourse often turns this reality upside down. Energy consumption is treated as a vice rather than a virtue. Scarcity is marketed as responsibility and productive consumption is portrayed as a crime. Ultimately, the Kardashev scale is about recognizing that the path toward greater freedom has never been paved by consuming less energy, but by mastering more of it. The future belongs not to societies that fear energy, but to those that harness it wisely. It belongs to nations that pursue abundance instead of managed scarcity. It also belongs to individuals who understand that every watt under their control is another step toward genuine sovereignty. Control your money, control your energy and stay sovereign.

分析的視点(So What?) 分析的視点(So What?)

![image](https://image.nostr.build/7b81e41c381dc261aa6207d02eb6674c7b2b0d0f908b82f78e6bb6205c61247a.jpg) 1. (財務評価資料「The Weight of Legacy Liabilities」より意訳) 2. 「So What?」 「So What?」

"The Bounded Catastrophe"

The oldest strategy for proving that fluid equations behave well is to show that energy stays finite. If the total energy of the flow is bounded, the flow cannot develop infinite velocities — or so the intuition goes. This intuition is wrong. Shi constructs smooth solutions to a system derived from the 3D axisymmetric Euler equations that explode in finite time. The velocity field develops a singularity. But a natural weighted energy — the quantity you would monitor to detect trouble — remains uniformly bounded throughout. The catastrophe happens without the energy budget noticing. The mechanism is geometric. The blow-up concentrates along specific "ridge ray" angles in the domain. Along these rays, the dynamics reduce to a one-dimensional Riccati equation — the simplest kind of ODE that can blow up. The energy, being a spatial integral, averages over all angles. The catastrophic concentration at a set of measure zero is invisible to any integral quantity. This doesn't solve the millennium problem of Navier-Stokes regularity — the system studied is a reduction, not the full equations. But it eliminates one of the main strategies people have tried. Energy boundedness, by itself, cannot rule out singularity formation. Whatever proof eventually works will need something more than energy. The lesson extends beyond fluid mechanics. In any system where a conserved quantity is a spatial average, singularities can hide at points of concentration that the average cannot see. The budget is balanced. The catastrophe is local.

The Building Battery

# The Building Battery Solar surplus — electricity generated during peak sunlight hours that exceeds immediate demand — is typically addressed by installing batteries. The batteries store midday generation for evening use, shifting clean energy into dirty hours. The framing assumes that storage requires dedicated hardware. Buildings already are batteries. Their thermal mass — concrete floors, masonry walls, water heaters — stores heat energy passively. Pre-heating or pre-cooling a building during solar surplus hours stores energy as thermal displacement from equilibrium. When the surplus ends, the building drifts back toward ambient temperature, releasing the stored energy as reduced heating or cooling demand during peak-emission hours. The approach requires no batteries, no new hardware, and no structural modification. It requires only a control strategy that adjusts HVAC setpoints based on grid carbon intensity — slightly overcooling during clean hours, slightly underheating during dirty hours. The thermal mass does the storage. The building envelope does the insulation. The existing HVAC system does the charging and discharging. The emissions reduction is meaningful because buildings are the largest consumers of electricity and the timing of their consumption is highly flexible. A building that needs to maintain 20-22°C can pre-cool to 20°C during solar surplus and let it drift to 22°C during peak demand — a shift invisible to occupants but significant for grid emissions. The structural observation: the problem was framed as "buildings need storage hardware" when the correct framing is "buildings need storage control." The storage medium was already installed — it is the building itself. The missing component was not physical but algorithmic.

Salty Cornflakes: A Transfer of Energy

>*Energy waves are disturbances that transfer energy through a medium or space without transferring matter. They move in various forms, such as compressions (longitudinal) or crests and troughs (transverse), carrying power from one point to another, crucial for communication, heating, and even generating electricity from ocean swells. - Google AI overview.* --- This morning, I woke up with a lot of energy. Even though I went to bed with a heavy head and heart, I awoke full of vitality, full of possibility, and full of the twenty wings I got for half-price the night before. Some would say I woke up on the right side of the bed. Despite only getting five hours of sleep, I was ready to go. I was talking loud, singing, and smacking the wife on her booty every time she walked near me. Good morning! I tried to transfer that energy to everyone in the house—specifically my wife and my daughter, who is home from college. My wife was game; she returned the vibes. My daughter, on the other hand, was not in that kind of mood. When I yelled her name to get her attention, I was met with an energy that ran straight through me. Here I was, positive and buzzing, and she returned serve with a not-so-motivated "Yeah." Yeah? Huh? Did she just say "Yeah" in response to all this positivity? I was aghast. I clutched my proverbial pearls. How could she return my joy with such blah? "I can't believe you'd turn down all this good energy for bad," I joked, pretending to cry. My wife, sitting right next to me, intervened. "Marh, she ain't feeling great." I yelled back something reckless, like, "I bet you don't give that boy the same energy when he's happy!" It was in jest, but with a little truth sprinkled on top. In an earlier blog, I wrote about how our relationship is "hard loving." We act more like homies than father and daughter most of the time. But today wasn't one of those times. Today, she needed our soft side. I had made the morning about my energy. I try to set the tone in the crib, to stay positive, but today I wasn't ready to be stopped in my tracks by the "Yeah" wall. So, there I was, sitting in a puddle of my own joy without my crazy homie. But in the midst of my thoughts, something hit me. I sat there for a few seconds, then stood up. "Let me hop up real quick," I said to my wife. "Let me go in there and give my daughter a hug." What came to mind were all the times her soft, genuine hug saved me. And I mean literally saved me. --- There was a time when I lost my business. I owned two Cold Stone Creamery franchises when I was twenty-five. Ironically, I bought them the year she was born, and I lost them two years later. That's a story for another time, but I remember that season so well. I had worked my way up from washing floor sinks to buying two stores in my hometown. And there I was, two years later, closing the doors. I was depressed. So depressed I would hallucinate. I probably shouldn't have been the caretaker for a two-year-old at that time. Every day I thought of offing myself. I thought everything was over. I had lost my stores, my car, and my first business—a duplex—because it was tied to the Cold Stone loans. *How will I ever make it back?* I thought every morning. I would sleep in every day—which anyone who knows me knows is hard for me to do. I was usually awakened by a two-year-old sitting on my head with a dirty diaper. That's how she woke me up. I would get up, change her diaper, and fix us a bowl of cereal. For a while, every single day, I would stand her up in a chair on one side of the table, and I would sit on the other side, look at her, and cry into my cereal. Those were some salty cornflakes. How could I let her and her brothers down? How could I lose everything we had? Since the time I had my first son, all I ever thought about was leaving him an inheritance—one that would last for my children's children. I thought surely Cold Stone was part of that. I mean, I had beaten the odds. My wife and I were once on food stamps and WIC. Before buying the duplex, we lived in income-based housing. Together we made it: a duplex, a nice car, a single-family home, and two franchise ice cream stores, all within our first six years of marriage. But I had lost almost all of it. Every tear asked *how?* Every snot bubble screamed *why?* I was ready to go. It was an angry cry, mostly. I was mad at myself. And there I was, sobbing across from a little one who had no clue why I was crying. But every day, this same little ball of cuteness would get down out of her chair, come over, get in my lap, and hug me. Hard. She gives the best hugs ever. Of course, I'd cry some more, but these were "get-right" tears. See, I had made everything about me. In those moments, my daughter made me understand I wasn't alone. That it was about us. All of us. My whole family. In those days, I woke up with awful, destructive energy. I was at the lowest I had ever been. I was just going through life, trying not to end it. My energy was far worse than "Yeah." It was actually "No." But my little ball of energy—she didn't know it—transferred her great energy to me. I feel like God had me home with her those exact days because her spirit helped me begin climbing out of the valley. She started it. I eventually started keeping all my little cousins, nieces, and nephews throughout the year. I didn't have a business anymore, and I was just learning how to program, so I had time. We'd go to the park and have relay races. We went on citywide bus adventures. I'd take them swimming. We had the best time. Their energy helped me tremendously. They didn't have a care in the world; they just wanted to come over to Uncle Marh's and have a good time. She doesn't always know it, but throughout the years, she has given me a hug at just the right time. She'll just be walking past my door, come in, and give me a hug. --- Good energy has the power to move people. It has the power to lift people from a despair you may not know they are dealing with. But you can't always share it the way you want to. It's like putting an egg in the microwave; you will make it explode. Sometimes you have to pass the energy on as a slow, steady boil. Today, my daughter needed the same hug she once gave me. So I walked to her room, sat down on her bed, and gave her a silent hug. She rose up and gave me a small smirk. I knew that was just what she needed. She needed my positive energy, but in a smaller, gentler way. The power I carried was able to touch something in her, to get her to rise out of bed and get her day started. And for me? She still gives the best hugs ever.

When Chiropractic Gets Weird: My Story of Energy, Intuition, and Healing

I’ve always gravitated to ideas and topics that are not quite mainstream: Well, like CHIROPRACTIC. But even in chiropractic school, I went fringe. I heard about one of the technique clubs (Toftness) that showed you how you could detect a subluxation by just rubbing your thumb over a piece of plexiglass. We were discussing that in a group, and most of my friends were saying: “What a load of shit!” And that made my ears perk up. So I started going to the club meetings. I walk in, and there’s a guy face down on a chiropractic table while another guy was holding what looked like some sort of cyberpunk lens. He started rubbing it and worked it down the guy's spine. He pointed out areas that were subluxated: “Here.” And going further down: “Here.” And: “Here.” Wow. Then he “adjusted” by touching the spine with his index finger. My mind was blown. So you mean I didn’t have to be adjusted the way Harvey Fish did? Dr. Fish was a great guy and would adjust students for, I think, $10. You’d go in, wait to see if he had any “real patients.” In between patients, he would adjust the students. He was heavy-handed and sure as hell able to move a bone. So now I’m intrigued and curious. I studied and practiced any chance I had. I had different friends that I studied different things with. (Except for Dyslexic Dave - nobody wanted to study with that guy. Our group did once, and we all failed a test. His dyslexia was so powerful, it overcame all of us.) I’d study all the weird stuff with my friend Victoria, and then we would go get our network chiropractic adjustment from Dr. Michael Scimeca. I found out that it wasn’t the Toftness lens that had the super-powers. Instead, it was because when your hand detected a change in energy over the spinal segments, there's a “galvanic response” similar to that of a polygraph lie detector test. So it made the skin on my hand “sweat,” and that made the plexiglass squeak and stick. So it wasn’t the equipment. It was me. After a while, I realized that I could feel a warmth on my chest right before the lens squeaked. So, I ditched the lens and started working on people where I “felt” the subluxations were located. Seemed to work well - I always double-checked my “regular” chiropractic findings with what I felt. We studied for exams, then practiced technique on each other. One time at a seminar, the instructor demonstrated what to do and asked for volunteers - one to be the patient and the other to be the doctor. I watched this guy struggling with his patient. It looked like he had flippers instead of hands; the whole interaction was super awkward. All of a sudden, I started feeling uncomfortable and just blurted out: “For God’s sake, leave him alone! Can’t you tell he is super annoyed and angry?” Oops. The instructor said, “Yes, maybe we should take a break.” The guy that was the patient came up to me and asked, “How did you know?” “I don’t know, I just felt it,” I said. After that I started trying to see if I could feel what others were feeling. So when I was bored in a class, I’d go down the rows and try to feel what the my fellow students felt and quickly move on. Going down the row: nothing, nothing nothing. This guy is pissed off, next one: nothing, nothing, Ow! She has a headache. Dammit! Now I have a headache! So that turned into a problem: When I worked on someone that had pain or other symptoms, I would take those on for myself. And the person I worked on would leave feeling great. My friend Juanita did what is called an "attunement," and I became a Reiki Master. Reiki masters are supposed to move energy around, but I was afraid I’d pick up too much of someone’s vibe and it would make me uncomfortable. Plus, I can’t be doing energy work if I’m a chiropractor now. So I kept all that checked and on the "down low"; sometimes I would get a "feeling" about a client while I was working on them. Surprisingly, it was always correct and it helped my client to make progress. At some point, I started feeling that I needed to be true to myself, and if I had these abilities and I was able to use them to help the people that came to see me, then that's what I was going to do. I've embraced this side of my work. If my clients need some emotional work, that’s what we work on, if they need some energy work, then they get it. I suppose some people don’t want a chiropractor that’s metaphysical, but really-that’s how it all started. There are plenty of “evidence-based” chiropractors out there that can’t adjust their way out of a paper bag. If the power goes off, they couldn’t use their lasers or whatever machine the Chiropractic Physiotherapy Industrial Complex wants you to buy now. While I appreciate all the fancy parties they throw for us at continuing education seminars, they are infiltrating the chiropractic schools and now we are pumping out new chiropractors that only think they will be successful if they have the latest and greatest shiny machine. I’ve studied a bunch of different things, I’ve found what works for me and refined it. I tell my clients : “I’m a better chiropractor today than I was yesterday, and I was pretty good back then!” So I guess my next step is teaching some of this information and hoping to pass it on before my time here is up. And you know what? I will love every damn minute of it! There's nothing quite like sharing the weird, the wonderful, and the downright strange ways we can help people heal. So, let's get to it—I've got a lot of sharing and teaching to do—it's going to be exciting!

Nuclear Power Explained by Dirk Eidemuller

I picked up this book 'Nuclear Power Explained' by Dirk Eidemuller to understand nuclear power and the historical context during the nuclear euphoria era. I’ll share a bit on the history part. Note: I have not seen the movie *Oppenheimer* yet. ### **Some key highlights :** **In 1933** -Leo Szilard thought of the nuclear chain reaction concept - whereby one nuclear reaction triggers a series of additional nuclear reactions, releasing a significant amount of energy. This is fundamental for nuclear reactors and weapons. He figured this out the same year he was fleeing from one country to another from Hitler. He tried to share this idea to Rutherford *but got kicked out of the office.* **In 1934** - Enrico Fermi first conducted the experiment in irradiating uranium with neutrons but unfortunately he did not spot anything **In 1938**, Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann's experiments accidentally found barium forming when they irradiated uranium with neutrons. Splitting uranium atoms was not a norm at that time. This new finding was the start of the nuclear era. --- **Fission vs. Fusion** * Fission splits heavy nuclei into smaller ones, whereas fusion combines light nuclei into heavier ones. * Fission is used in nuclear reactors and atomic bombs, while fusion is the process that powers stars (energy is produced when hydrogen nuclei combine to form helium). The goal of developing fusion-based power generation on Earth is still work-in-progress. Thermonuclear bombs (super bombs) use fusion as well. --- Otto Hahn collaborated with Lisa Meitner, Germany's first female physics professor, who fled to Sweden due to Nazi persecution. Lisa encouraged Hahn to repeat Fermi’s experiment with high precision. Lisa Meitner and her cousin Otto Frisch analyzed the results and coined the term "fission." (*Note : Women physicist were gaining popularity during that time - Marie Curie, nuclear physics, won 2 nobel price for her work*) **1938** - Otto Hahn and Lisa published their results. Nuclear physicists worldwide were in disbelief. In the early days, Albert Einstein didn’t think it was possible. He said that the whole thing would be like shooting at “birds in the dark in a country where there are few birds.” Ernest Rutherford (who introduced the atom particle model in 1911 ) thought that it was an absurd idea to try to generate energy in this way. Note : both Rutherford and Bohr introduced the atom particle model, both had a central nucleus and electrons. Bohr’s model was more detailed and led to quantum mechanics and modern behaviour of atoms. **1939** - WW2 started on Sep 1, 1939 **1941** - Japan attacked Pearl Harbor in Hawaii After Otto Hahn’s paper released, a few things happened Albert Einstein's E=mc^2 links energy and mass, and while this concept has been around for a while and is based on space and time and initially unrelated to nuclear, it also explained nuclear fission's energy release. Szilard, who was a long time friend of Einstein, reached out and shared the nuclear reaction theory and its potential for killer weapons. They were worried Nazis might build it first and bomb the US. They wrote to President Roosevelt to establish research for nuclear weapons to counter a possible attack. To add to suspicion, Germany halted uranium sales from occupied Czechoslovak mines. *(Einstein later on said he regretted this letter after witnessing the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. If he knew Germany wouldn't succeed in making an atomic bomb, he wouldn't have taken action)* Alexander Sachs, a friend of Szilárd and Roosevelt delivered the letter. At first President Roosevelt was not interested. Concurrently Germany invaded Poland, the tension was rising. Sachs apparently used the analogy of Robert Fulton proposing steamships to Napoleon (to up the notch on traditional sail ships) to convince Roosevelt of the need for a large-scale nuclear research program. **1942** - Roosevet finally agreed The scientists formed a committee. Military were initially skeptical and wanted to cut costs. The scientists received $6,000 to start the **Manhattan Project.** **The First Nuclear Reactor** : Chicago Pile-1 - a group of popular physicists, including Enrico Fermi and Leó Szilárd, designed the first nuclear reactor ever built by humans. It had 5.4 tons of pure uranium metal and another 45 tons of uranium oxide. The first nuclear reactor is underneath an unused grandstand of the University of Chicago’s football stadium. **1942** - The first test was on Dec 2. If the chain reaction went awry, a worker would use an axe to cut a rope and release an emergency control rod above the reactor. There was also an automatic shutdown system, and someone ready to pour cadmium salt from above, which stops the chain reaction. It was a success - the reactor ran at minimum power to initiate a nearly self-sustaining chain reaction. This led to more reactors and bomb-grade plutonium to be produced. *(note : if you are reading up to here, plutoniums are man-made, and not mined from earth the same way uranium, minerals and ores are)* France was quickly occupied in the war, and its nuclear research material was brought to Germany. The Soviet Union put in very little effort on the atomic bomb during this time as they needed to fight against the Nazis. In Japan, too, nuclear research proceeded slowly. In Germany, multiple research groups operated within the "Uranium Association" also known as “Uranverein”. Popular figures like Werner Heisenberg, Carl Friedrich von Weizsäcker and Walther Gerlach worked on it but failed to activate it. In England, German- Austrian emigrants Otto Frisch and Rudolf Peierls initiated the “MAUD Committee'' (Military Application of Uranium Detonation) . Unfortunately England classified them as “enemy aliens" hence they went to Los Alamos to work on the US nuclear tech. Their work led to the British-Canadian “Tube Alloys” secret project, which kickstarted the American Manhattan Project. This American Manhattan project under President Eisenhower introduced nuclear reactors to Iran, Pakistan and Israel. But more on that later. After the successful experiments with the Chicago Pile-1, the American atomic bomb project proceeded at full speed. The Manhattan Project had more than 150,000 people working on it! Everything was done under the highest military secrecy. With the exception of the leading scientists and military personnel, nobody knew what was actually being worked on until the news of the destruction of Hiroshima. With two billion dollars (massive at that time), leading scientist and nuclear physicist Robert Oppenheimer and General Leslie Groves quickly built a secret nuclear research center in remote Los Alamos, New Mexico, and established a nuclear industry as big as the entire American automobile industry during that era. The Los Alamos Laboratory was called Project Y where the actual bomb design was being researched University of Chicago’s met lab was a big research contributor during this euphoric nuclear era Oak Ridge, Tennessee, known as "Atomic City," had large isotope separation facilities, two massive diffusion plants, one of which was the world's largest building at the time, and an electromagnetic separation plant. It provided the uranium for the Hiroshima bomb (little boy). The Hanford site provided the uranium for the Nagasaki bomb (fat man). **April 1945** - Harry Truman became U.S. President. And four months later, he authorized nuclear attacks on Japanese **civilians**. **June 1945** - Szilard and Franck co-authored the "Franck Report" with fellow scientists. They cautioned against using nuclear bombs on civilians, **July 1945** - Szilard and other dozen researchers wrote to president Harry Truman to urgently warn him against civilian targets (The Szilard petition) **August 6, 1945** * Hiroshima bomb ~140,000 people died * Nagasaki bomb ~70,000 people died Robert Oppenheimer on this explosion : “***Now I have become death, the destroyer of worlds***.” (from the Bhagavad Gita, a sacred Hindu text) **September 2,1945** - WW2 ended **In October 1945** , Oppenheimer resigned. **1946** - One year after the war, Leo Szilárd and Albert Einstein started the Emergency Committee of Atomic Scientists to inform the public about nuclear weapons and promote global peace. Szilard also arranged conferences with scientists from both sides East and West to find better ways for security and peace. After WW2, Soviet Union caught up with the US nuclear tech through espionage **1949** - Soviet detonated their first nuclear bomb in Semipalatinsk Test Site, in Kazakhstan. **In 1949** Fermi and Nobel laureate Isidor Rabi cautioned that this new weapon could have devastating consequences, approaching genocide. **1950 - 1953** - Korean war between communism (North Korea) and capitalism (South Korea). The US supported South Korea but decided against nuclear weapons due to ethical concerns. But the ideology war was becoming more apparent here. **1952** - Great Britain detonated its first atomic bomb **1952** - US developed the first hydrogen bomb - **based on nuclear fusion and not nuclear fission. **These super bombs were 800x stronger than the Hiroshima bomb. Instead of splitting the atomic nuclei to smaller ones, very light atomic nuclei are fused into heavier ones which enables a greater explosive forces Oppenheimer spoke against the development of thermonuclear weapons/hydrogen bombs. **In the 1940s and 1950s** during the McCarthy era, there was widespread fear of communism. People worked to expose anyone they thought might be associated with communism. Senator Joseph McCarthy led investigations, and J. Robert Oppenheimer was accused of having communist ties. **In 1954** - Oppenheimer’s security clearance was revoked by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission after a highly publicized hearing accusing him of a communist past. **1955** - Einstein passed away. He was 76 **1958** - Khrushchev became premier (Soviet Union). In his first full briefing after having a full view of the nuclear environment he said “ *I could not sleep for several days. Then I became convinced that we could never possibly use these weapons, and when I realized that I was able to sleep again.*” There’s a long bit on him and JFK eventually working out peace in secrecy... **1960** - Szilárd met with Nikita Khrushchev in New York for two hours. He convinced the Soviet leader to support the idea of a hotline with the US to prevent accidental nuclear war. **1960** - France detonated its first atomic bomb **1961** - JFK came to power **1962** - Cuban Missile Crisis - lasted for 2 weeks. The Cuban Missile Crisis began when the Soviet Union secretly placed nuclear missiles in Cuba, just 90 miles from the US, raising the threat of nuclear conflict. It ended with an agreement between the US and Soviet Union: 1. The U.S. wouldn't invade Cuba. 2. The USSR would remove its Cuban missiles. 3. The U.S. would secretly remove its missiles from Turkey, easing tensions. The end of Cuban Missile crisis started the peace journey between US and the Soviet Unions. But sadly, not everybody loved peace. **1963** - JFK was assassinated **1964** - Khrushchev was ousted **1964** - Leo Szilard died of heart attack **1964** - China detonated its first atomic bomb **1983** - another possible nuclear attack during the Cold War - Soviet satellites wrongly signaled an American missile attack. Stanislav Petrov, in charge, could have launched a nuclear counterattack but didn't because he thought it was a technical glitch. It turned out he was right; sunlight reflections caused the false alarm. Petrov's decision likely averted a disastrous nuclear war. But it’s worrying how easy it was for world disaster. **1991** - The Cold War ended when the Berlin Wall came down, a significant symbol of bridging the East and the West --- ### Part 2 - nuclear as electricity instead of bombs. Throughout this time there was a growing shift to use nuclear power as electricity. I separated both timelines to have a clearer view on it **1951** - first reactor in Idaho used to generate electricity instead of bombs (small test reactor) **Jan 1953**- President Eisenhower came was elected to office **Dec 1953** - President Eisenhower delivered his infamous "Atoms for Peace" speech to the UN, on the dangers of nuclear war and the potential of nuclear technology for human development. He encouraged countries to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes (electricity). Iran, Israel, and Pakistan being among the first to agree. American Machine and Foundry constructed their early nuclear facilities. This change from military to civilian use was made possible by amendments to the Atomic Energy Act. **1954**- Russia built the first real reactor that converts nuclear power into electricity and supply it to the public power grid **1955**- On August 8, in Geneva, Switzerland, the largest scientific conference in history, called the “International Conference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy,” began. More than 1500 participants from East and West exchanged what were previously secretive results with surprising openness and aroused the curiosity of the world publicly. **1955** - The first nuclear-powered submarine, USS Nautilus, was put to sea **1956**- the second nuclear power plant that produced electricity on an industrial scale in Calder Hall, near Windscale in England **1958** - the first commercialized power reactor in the US in Shippingport, Pennsylvania **In the 70’s**- oil crisis promoted the use of nuclear as energy **1986** - Chernobyl (30 people died) - The Chernobyl disaster resulted from a poorly designed experiment at nuclear reactor Unit 4. They turned off safety systems, removed control rods, and ran the reactor at 7 percent power. **2011**- Fukushima disaster (19,759 died) - After a major earthquake, a 15-metre tsunami disabled the power supply and cooling of three Fukushima Daiichi reactors. This led to a nuclear accident on March 11, 2011. All three cores mostly melted within the first three days. There are a lot of learning from disasters. New reactor designs aim for safety and efficiency, but some projects face rising costs and delays. Managing radioactive waste remains a challenge. The future of nuclear power's role in global electricity is uncertain. If one day nuclear power is really safe, each home can have its own mini power plants. There are 436 nuclear reactors in the world located in 32 countries as of May 2023 On average, nuclear powers 10% of global power needs. Some countries are heading for 20% --- **2 takeaways :** 1. United States created and won the nuclear race because it welcomed immigrants - who turned out to be superstar nuclear physicist persecuted in their countries 2. International cooperation, advocated by many researchers since the discovery of nuclear fission, hopefully outweighs power politics.

Insider view on renewable energy!

Inspired by a post of Lyn Alden about the cost of "green energy" i would like to start my first Article at NOSTR abour Renewable Energy Sector. To be clear at this point. I am using NOSTR to publish topics about renewable energy sector which i could not publish without NOSTR or without risking my job. But i find it nessesary to talk about some topics and to clarify some others. I think i will not be able to put everything into one Article so I guess this is the Beginning of the Series: # Insider view on renewable energy! But now let us start with the post of Lyn that gave me some inspiration. > *If “green energy” (including w/ storage as needed) costs more than hydrocarbons and doesn’t win in the marketplace, then maybe it is more environmentally impactful than you think, with energy-intensive and materially-intensive supply chains. Likewise, if fake meat costs more than real meat, then maybe it too is more environmentally impactful then you think, with energy-intensive and materially-intensive supply chains.* Lyn Alden Let us focus on the Renewables Part. I don't want to talk about the beyond meat nonsens. The question if green energy costs more than hydrocarbons can be answered quite fast. And this will be the main topic for today to clarify. Like we all hope to see mass adoption of Bitcoin the world has seen mass adoption of renewables already and still sees it. Many are still argumenting that Renewables are only profitable with subsidies. And this is true, if we're still back in 2013. Many people talking about this still have their knowledge from ten years ago and missed to keep up with the development. Meanwhile we have passed the break even point between some renewable energy technologies in comparison to the former cheap energy provided by coal plants back in around 2015. Somewhere around this time we have seen the shift where the LCOE of wind energy has broken through the LCOE line of coal. Simple as that. ![image](https://assets.bbhub.io/professional/sites/24/LCOEfig2-768x532.png) Looking onto the Research data from Bloomberg we see the impressive technological push of the last ten years and how onshore wind became the leading electricity source in terms of cost. Hydropower is not included in this picture but in comparison it is competitive to wind and solar. And now we have at least three renewables that we can call cost efficient in comparison to hydrocarbons. - **Onshore wind** - **Solarpower** - **Hydropower** The third one is interesting for all those who still argument about the missing base load in renewables. I hope that now it is easy for everybody to understand that renewables have to play a role in our elecrtrical grid. The 2023 technology in this field is amazing and there is still a lot to research about. Since i started my research on this 17 years ago the technological landscape has changed dramatically. Ten years ago we could not imagine what we would build this year. Coming back to the question raised by Lyn, I would like to ask another one back. If "green energy" is the most cost effective way to produce electricity, what the hell is wrong in this industry? The answer to this question is manigfold and will be answered in this new series. I dearly hope you enjoyed reading and are now curious for more. Mateusz
