'Lockdown Mode' comes to Android. Would you turn it on?

Google says that Android 16 is slated to feature an **optional high security mode**. Cool. **Advanced Protection** has a bunch of requested features that address the kinds of threats we worry about. It's the kind of *'t****urn this one thing on if you face elevated risk'* that we've been asking for from Google.** And likely reflects some learning after Google watched [Apple](https://x.com/Apple) 's Lockdown Mode play out. I see a lot of value in this.. *Here are some features I'm excited to see play out:* The** Intrusion Logging **feature is interesting & is going to impose substantial cost on attackers trying to hide evidence of exploitation. Logs get e2ee encrypted into the cloud. This one is spicy. The **Offline Lock, Inactivity Reboot & USB protection** will frustrate non-consensual attempts to physically grab device data. ![](https://blossom.primal.net/5ae79b98e1067b93def198dff65c59328329ae3b02c69910da8f5e5e8a434c3b.jpg "Some of these fancy new always-on features") **Memory Tagging Extension** is going to make a lot of attack & exploitation categories harder. **2G Network Protection **& disabling **Auto-connect to insecure networks** are going to address categories of threat from things like IMSI catchers & hostile WiFi. *I'm curious about some other features such as:* **Spam & Scam detection**: Google messages feature that suggests message content awareness and some kind of scanning. **Scam detection for Phone by Google** is interesting & coming later. The way it is described suggests phone conversation awareness. This also addresses a different category of threat than the stuff above. I can see it addressing a whole category of bad things that regular users (& high risk ones too!) face. Will be curious how privacy is addressed or if this done purely locally. *Getting messy: Friction points?* I see Google thinking these through, but I'm going to add a potential concern: what will users do when they encounter friction? Will they turn this off & forget to re-enable? We've seen users turn off iOS Lockdown Mode when they run into friction for specific websites or, say, legacy WiFi. They then forget to turn it back on. And should be factored into design decisions for similar modes. I feel like a good balance is a 'snooze button' or equivalent so that users can disable all/some features for a brief few minute period to do something they need to do, and then auto re-enable. *Winding up:* I'm excited to see how [Android](https://x.com/hashtag/Android?src=hashtag_click) Advanced Protection plays with high risk users' experiences. I'm also super curious whether the spam/scam detection features may also be helpful to more vulnerable users (think: aging seniors)... *Niche but important:* Some users, esp. those that migrated to security & privacy-focused Android distros because of because of the absence of such a feature are clear candidates for it... But they may also voice privacy concerns around some of the screening features. Clear communication from the Google Security / Android team will be key here.

How to exit apple and enter GrapheneOS

hello, if you are an apple user this one is for you. APPL is one of the biggest software companies in the world, their user base is huge.. they sell on the idea that they are more "private" , but i think that is somewhat of a gimmick. Apple relies on their word and is not open source. For this reason i do NOT use an iphone or any apple product for said reason. i do NOT think this is a security enhancement, i do NOT think apple's security is less value based on it's lack of transparency. What i do think is that FOSS is the way to free themself from digital slavery or what is more refereed as the walled garden. The GrapheneOS argument My first point is that GrapheneOS is NOT a custom ROM. This is directly from the maintainers of GrapheneOS https://x.com/GrapheneOS/status/1588599635337445377 GrapheneOS Gives true freedom and more control over your device - storage scope limits access to your files - contacts scope limits what apps can have access to your contacts - googleplay sandbox provides stronger security and privacy. - gets on time security updates ----------------------------------------------------- Apple and other proprietary software is in my opinion again a forum of digital slavery. i understand the social pressure on people over the color of the text {green vs blue }, but, that doesn't make it any less ridiculous. Another point i must make out is that apple needs an account to function while grapheneOS does not Apple will hold your hand and disallow you to side load apps due to "security " they have not open their e2e messaging platform for some weird reason (even though i still say use signal) even though it would be a step-up from sms which is not encrypted. there is a ton of resources so you can transition into the free and open source ecosystem

 The broken English was a satirical way to mimic this behavior, implying a lack of effort in both coding and communication. It also highlighted the frustration of more experienced developers who felt like some users were relying too heavily on others to solve their problems, rather than trying to learn or troubleshoot on their own. In a sense, it became a meme within tech communities, used to gently (or not so gently) mock those who sought quick fixes without understanding the underlying concepts, often referred to as “help vampires.” But ChatGPT doesn't care if I'm lazy or not. It simply aims to get me to a solution, without ever growing tired or frustrated. This might seem like it's enabling laziness, but I'd argue it's more about efficiency. ChatGPT lets me focus on the higher-level problem-solving while it handles the grunt work of code generation, debugging, and providing quick solutions. And the more I iterate with it, the better I understand the code. Like most developers, I rely heavily on Google searches and the usual developer haunts like Stack Overflow or blog articles to solve coding issues. While these resources have been great, I often find myself sifting through outdated or irrelevant answers, combing through endless comment threads, or wasting time on lengthy articles just to find one snippet of useful information. That changed once I started using ChatGPT for coding help. Now, instead of navigating through the wild west of search results, I can simply ask ChatGPT for code examples, troubleshooting tips, or even detailed explanations for specific coding problems. Whether it’s helping me fine-tune a service class, debug a tricky asset pipeline issue, or generate scaffolding for a new feature, ChatGPT gives me direct, practical solutions. Recently, when working with the Mastodon API in Rails, ChatGPT has often been quicker and more on-point than sifting through older, less reliable tutorials or (shudder) the API documentation itself. In many ways, ChatGPT has become my first port of call for problem-solving, leaving Google searches and Stack Overflow as backups rather than primary resources. While ChatGPT has become my go-to tool for coding, we all know that it's not infallible. Just like any other resource, it occasionally provides incorrect or incomplete solutions. This is where the experience diverges from traditional platforms like Stack Overflow, where the community-driven voting system helps surface the most accurate and reliable answers. On Stack Overflow, answers are often vetted by thousands of developers, and top responses gain credibility through upvotes and comments, offering a degree of confidence in their accuracy. With ChatGPT, there's no such communal vetting process. The AI generates its responses based on patterns and information from a large dataset, but it can occasionally miss context or misinterpret a query. For example, ChatGPT might suggest syntax or methods that are outdated, or it might not fully account for edge cases specific to your application. When this happens, it's essential to double-check the solution, test it thoroughly, and trust your own experience and instincts. I'm curious to see how we might combine human vetting with AI-generated solutions. Imagine a new version of Stack Overflow where AI answers are paired with human insights, allowing for an even faster, more accurate troubleshooting process. Developers could benefit from the instant suggestions of AI, vetted and improved upon by community feedback—creating a virtuous cycle where the best solutions rise to the top.
 ChatGPT brings a blend of speed and convenience that traditional platforms like Stack Overflow can't match. While I treat its responses as a starting point rather than the final word, when combined with personal experience and careful testing, the results are an order of magnitude better than sifting through ad-bloated search results. In the end it’s all about the results.
