Why I Chose Debian and Nostr to Protect My Digital Sovereignty

# Why I Chose Debian and Nostr to Protect My Digital Sovereignty In the Bitcoin ecosystem, we often repeat the motto *"Don't trust, verify."* However, many crypto enthusiasts still make the mistake of accessing their wallets and digital identities through highly centralized operating systems packed with telemetry and proprietary trackers. In this article, I want to share the technical reasons why I migrated to a setup focused on absolute sovereignty, using **Debian Linux**, the **Brave Browser**, and the **Nostr** protocol. --- ## 1. The Operating System: The Rock-Solid Security of Debian Choosing **Debian** as the baseline for my Bitcoin environment was a deliberate choice. It provides crucial advantages for anyone dealing with crypto: * **Fully Open Source (FOSS):** No hidden software harvesting keys or tracking my browsing habits in the background. * **Unshakable Stability:** Debian Stable ensures that sudden system updates won't break my sensitive wallets or browser extensions. * **Process Isolation:** A security architecture far superior to traditional, consumer-grade mobile and desktop operating systems. --- ## 2. Digital Identity: Nostr + Alby on Desktop Instead of using mobile apps that expose private keys to less controlled environments, I isolated my identity setup entirely on my desktop Linux machine: 1. **Brave Browser:** Aggressively blocks cross-site trackers and fingerprinting attempts out of the box. 2. **Alby Extension:** Acts as my cryptographic vault inside the browser. My private key (`nsec`) never leaves the extension, and websites only request authorized digital signatures. ```text [ Private Key (Alby) ] ---> Cryptographic Signature ---> [ Primal / YakiHonne ] ``` --- ## 3. The Future of Content Economy (Value-for-Value) By migrating to Nostr-native publishing clients like **YakiHonne**, I realized the true power of **Zaps**. I no longer depend on Google ad algorithms or centralized Web2 platform approvals to monetize my time and knowledge. The relationship is now strictly peer-to-peer: if the content delivers value, the reader sends Satoshis instantly via the Lightning Network. --- ### Conclusion Financial sovereignty with Bitcoin strictly requires digital sovereignty over the infrastructure you use. If you want to protect your funds and your privacy, I highly recommend migrating your workspace to the open-source Linux ecosystem. --- #bitcoin #linux #debian #foss #privacy

Bitcoin CPU Lottery Miner Using Your Own Full Node

# Bitcoin CPU Lottery Miner on Linux Using Your Own Full Node I have a 32 thread Ryzen CPU in my Debian PC and I definitely don't use most of that computing power most of the time. I thought it would be fun to throw a few of those idle threads at solo lottery mining with my own full node. Here are the steps if you want to try the same thing: This is **not profitable CPU mining**. It is **educational lottery mining**. Odds are extremely low, but the setup performs real SHA256d mining against your own node. (*this guide assumes you already have a full node running on your PC that is started by a systemd service. If you do not use systemd for that then just disregard step 1 and start with step 2.*) --- ## 1. Verify your Bitcoin node config path ```bash systemctl --user status bitcoind.service ``` Look for: ```bash -datadir=/path/to/your/bitcoin/datadir -conf=/path/to/your/bitcoin.conf ``` --- ## 2. Edit `bitcoin.conf` ```bash nano /path/to/your/bitcoin.conf ``` Add or verify: ```conf server=1 rpcbind=127.0.0.1 rpcallowip=127.0.0.1 zmqpubhashblock=tcp://127.0.0.1:28332 ``` --- ## 3. Create RPC credentials for ckpool ```bash python3 - <<'PY' import secrets, hmac, hashlib user = "ckpool" password = secrets.token_urlsafe(32) salt = secrets.token_hex(16) digest = hmac.new(salt.encode(), password.encode(), hashlib.sha256).hexdigest() print("Add this line to bitcoin.conf:") print(f"rpcauth={user}:{salt}${digest}") print() print("Use this password in ckpool.conf:") print(password) PY ``` - Copy the printed `rpcauth=ckpool:...` line into `bitcoin.conf` - Save the printed password --- ## 4. Restart your node ```bash systemctl --user daemon-reload systemctl --user restart bitcoind.service ``` Test RPC: ```bash bitcoin-cli \ -datadir=/path/to/your/bitcoin/datadir \ -conf=/path/to/your/bitcoin.conf \ getblockchaininfo ``` Optional alias: ```bash echo "alias bitcoin-cli-node='bitcoin-cli -datadir=/path/to/your/bitcoin/datadir -conf=/path/to/your/bitcoin.conf'" >> ~/.bashrc source ~/.bashrc ``` --- ## 5. Install all build dependencies ```bash sudo apt update sudo apt install -y \ git build-essential autoconf automake libtool pkg-config \ libssl-dev libevent-dev libzmq3-dev yasm \ libcurl4-openssl-dev libjansson-dev \ lm-sensors ``` --- ## 6. Build ckpool-solo ```bash mkdir -p ~/apps cd ~/apps git clone https://github.com/golden-guy/ckpool-solo.git cd ckpool-solo ./autogen.sh ./configure make -j"$(nproc)" ``` --- ## 7. Configure ckpool ```bash nano ~/apps/ckpool-solo/ckpool.conf ``` Replace the contents of the file with this: ```json { "btcd" : [ { "url" : "127.0.0.1:8332", "auth" : "ckpool", "pass" : "PASTE_YOUR_GENERATED_RPC_PASSWORD_HERE", "notify" : true } ], "serverurl" : [ "127.0.0.1:3333" ], "btcsig" : "/solo/" } ``` --- ## 8. Test ckpool manually ```bash cd ~/apps/ckpool-solo src/ckpool -k -B -c ckpool.conf ``` Expected output: ```text Connected to bitcoind: 127.0.0.1:8332 Mining solo to any incoming valid BTC address username ``` Stop with: ```bash Ctrl+C ``` Start detached: ```bash ~/apps/ckpool-solo/src/ckpool -k -B -D -c ~/apps/ckpool-solo/ckpool.conf ``` Verify: ```bash pgrep -a ckpool ss -ltnp | grep 3333 ``` --- ## 9. Build cpuminer ```bash cd ~/apps git clone https://github.com/pooler/cpuminer.git cd cpuminer ./autogen.sh ./configure make -j"$(nproc)" ``` Test: ```bash ./minerd --help ``` --- ## 10. Test mining manually ```bash cd ~/apps/cpuminer ./minerd -a sha256d \ -o stratum+tcp://127.0.0.1:3333 \ -O YOUR_BITCOIN_ADDRESS.worker:x \ -t 4 ``` --- ## 11. Check CPU temperature ```bash sudo sensors-detect sensors ``` Live monitoring: ```bash watch -n 2 sensors ``` Temperature guidance: ``` <75°C comfortable sustained load 75–85°C running a bit hot 85–90°C high, reduce load >90°C DANGER!!! ``` --- ## 12. Enable services to run after logout ```bash loginctl enable-linger "$USER" ``` --- ## 13. Create ckpool systemd service ```bash mkdir -p ~/.config/systemd/user nano ~/.config/systemd/user/ckpool.service ``` ```ini [Unit] Description=ckpool solo Stratum server After=bitcoind.service Requires=bitcoind.service [Service] Type=simple WorkingDirectory=/home/YOUR_USER/apps/ckpool-solo ExecStart=/home/YOUR_USER/apps/ckpool-solo/src/ckpool -k -B -c /home/YOUR_USER/apps/ckpool-solo/ckpool.conf ExecStop=/usr/bin/pkill -TERM -x ckpool Restart=on-failure RestartSec=10 [Install] WantedBy=default.target ``` --- ## 14. Create miner environment file ```bash mkdir -p ~/.config/minerd nano ~/.config/minerd/minerd.env ``` ```bash BTC_ADDRESS=YOUR_BITCOIN_ADDRESS MINER_THREADS=4 CPU_QUOTA=200% ``` --- ## 15. Create minerd systemd service ```bash nano ~/.config/systemd/user/minerd.service ``` ```ini [Unit] Description=Bitcoin CPU lottery miner After=ckpool.service Requires=ckpool.service [Service] Type=simple EnvironmentFile=/home/YOUR_USER/.config/minerd/minerd.env WorkingDirectory=/home/YOUR_USER/apps/cpuminer ExecStart=/home/YOUR_USER/apps/cpuminer/minerd -a sha256d -o stratum+tcp://127.0.0.1:3333 -O ${BTC_ADDRESS}.worker:x -t ${MINER_THREADS} Restart=on-failure RestartSec=10 Nice=15 CPUWeight=10 CPUQuota=${CPU_QUOTA} IOSchedulingClass=idle [Install] WantedBy=default.target ``` --- ## 16. Stop manual processes ```bash pkill minerd pkill ckpool ``` --- ## 17. Enable and start services ```bash systemctl --user daemon-reload systemctl --user enable ckpool.service minerd.service systemctl --user start ckpool.service systemctl --user start minerd.service ``` --- ## 18. Adjust threads or CPU cap ```bash nano ~/.config/minerd/minerd.env ``` Example: ```bash MINER_THREADS=4 CPU_QUOTA=200% ``` Restart: ```bash systemctl --user restart minerd.service ``` --- ## 20. Expected result Example output: ```text thread 0: 16700 khash/s thread 1: 16700 khash/s thread 2: 16700 khash/s thread 3: 16700 khash/s ``` Total: ```text ~66.8 MH/s ``` --- ## Final Notes - This is **lottery mining**, not income generation - You are mining directly against your own node - You control the full stack: node → stratum → miner - This is useful for learning and sovereignty, not profit - You have a better chance of winning the powerball than getting a block reward, but the point is, you are now fully participating in the Bitcoin network! Later you can point any ASICs you have to mine to the same stratum server if you really want to get serious about solo mining.

Understanding Artificially Complex XML Schemas and Vendor Lock-In

A few days ago, I stumbled across a fascinating article by Italo Vignoli on The Document Foundation blog, titled “An artificially complex XML schema as a lock-in tool.” It caught my eye because it tackles an issue I've seen play out repeatedly throughout my career—vendor lock-in disguised within technical standards. We've all encountered XML (Extensible Markup Language), the backbone of cross-platform data interchange, praised for its clarity, simplicity, and universality. I've worked on numerous projects, from healthcare to government contracts, and XML was always there, quietly ensuring compatibility and seamless data exchange. But as Vignoli points out, XML’s openness doesn't always translate into freedom—especially when it comes to document formats. The crux of his argument revolves around Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML), the underlying format for the familiar DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files. On paper, OOXML seems open enough: it's XML-based, standardized, and widely adopted. Yet, beneath its open facade lies an intentionally convoluted schema—bloated with deeply nested tags, obscure naming conventions, and thousands of optional or abstract elements. And here’s the kicker: the official specification runs to over 8,000 pages! Let me share a vivid analogy from Vignoli's article that really clarified this issue for me. Imagine a public railway: the tracks are open to everyone, but the leading train manufacturer imposes an insanely complicated control system. Yes, anyone could theoretically build a compatible train, but the complexity ensures only the original manufacturer can feasibly do it. Passengers remain unaware until fares rise or service quality drops—and by then, they're trapped. This is precisely what's happening with OOXML. Documents may look identical onscreen, but their hidden complexity makes third-party implementations prohibitively difficult. Vignoli demonstrates this starkly by comparing OOXML to the vendor-neutral OpenDocument Format (ODF), used by LibreOffice. To illustrate: writing a simple sentence like “To be, or not to be” generates a concise 32-line XML file in ODF. In OOXML, it expands to 41 lines—breaking words into numerous tags and embedding multiple proprietary namespaces. Scaling this up, the full text of Hamlet balloons from roughly 5,600 lines in ODF to an astonishing 93,000+ lines in OOXML. That complexity isn't accidental; it's strategic. I've seen this first-hand. Years ago, I worked on a document migration project for a government client. We started with thousands of DOCX files, and converting them reliably into another format felt like defusing a bomb. Every subtle update from Microsoft risked breaking our carefully reverse-engineered code, costing countless hours and frustration. Many colleagues echoed a sentiment of resignation: "We're stuck; what else can we do?" Microsoft argues that OOXML’s complexity stems from needing to support extensive legacy features and compatibility. There's truth in that; backward compatibility is challenging. But does it really justify an 87,000-line markup overhead for Hamlet? Not likely. Instead, this complexity functions as a "soft" lock-in, quietly discouraging migration to other tools and subtly reinforcing dependency on Microsoft's ecosystem. Journalists and academics have noted similar trends. A Reuters report from way back in 2007 already highlighted concerns about OOXML’s complexity, calling it "artificially complicated." XDA Developers recently echoed these concerns, reinforcing that complexity prevents interoperability and fosters dependency. What's encouraging, however, is how governments are waking up to this issue. Denmark recently announced it’s shifting public infrastructure from Microsoft 365 to LibreOffice, specifically citing the need to reduce vulnerability and foster innovation. Schleswig-Holstein in Germany is doing the same, migrating 30,000 public-sector PCs to open standards. They understand something crucial: digital sovereignty requires open, transparent, and genuinely interoperable document formats. When formats remain genuinely open and manageable—like ODF—they empower users, developers, and governments alike. They ensure you retain control over your data. They promote competition, innovation, and accessibility. I’ve learned that embracing open standards isn’t just a technical decision; it’s about preserving autonomy in an increasingly monopolized digital landscape. So, the next time you're choosing software or a document format for a project, look beyond mere compatibility. Question the complexity beneath the surface. Ask yourself: "Am I inadvertently locking myself (or my organization) into an ecosystem where my data could someday become inaccessible?" Remember, complexity should serve content, not vendors.

"Privacidade significa ter o controle total sobre seus próprios dados e quem pode ou não acessá-los." - Philip Zimmermann.
