Zen and the Art of Frying Chicken

*a delicious meditation* Those of you who know me are aware that I worked in the fast-food industry before becoming a chiropractor. My first job was at a Hardee's restaurant when I was fifteen. I wanted to buy a car, which is why I started working. Once I bought the car, I realized I needed to continue working to maintain it, pay for gas, insurance, and the occasional "going out" money. In the restaurant business, if you work at a place long enough, someone hands you a set of keys and puts you in charge of something. So here I was, running a restaurant and in charge of a bunch of people, when I could barely take care of myself. Anyway, I was making what I thought was decent money for a 19-year-old. My bosses started a new restaurant venture, and little by little, they began poaching the old management staff from Hardee’s. Eventually, they asked me to come work for them. My new job was running a Church's Chicken. The stores were small, mostly takeout. The menu was small, and we didn't have many employees to manage. We didn't have a good reputation in the community due to poor management. The owners introduced new registers, and sales immediately jumped. I suppose all the food was now being rung up and accounted for! We cleaned up the restaurant and made sure we were putting out a good product, and guess what? **Sales doubled.** So here I am, thinking I know what I'm doing because I'm getting recognition from my bosses. I didn't have the interpersonal skills to manage people effectively. One time, I got into it with an employee but couldn't confront him to fire him, so I deleted him from the time clock. Let someone else deal with that. Dealing with customers was usually okay because if they had an issue, you could just fix the problem, and that was it. Handling employees was a bit more challenging for me. On busy days-Fridays, Saturdays, and Mother's Day (they called that the day after the welfare checks came out) The restaurant would get so busy that sometimes people would line up around the building, and I felt that everyone was staring at me, which made me feel uncomfortable. The store had windows all around; it was like a fishbowl-everyone saw everything. I could have gone to hide in the office, but I needed to help out. I liked to run a tight ship labor-wise, so I always counted myself as one of the staff needed. I would ask the cook to let me make the chicken and assign them some other tasks. Even though I was probably even more visible than before, I would get lost in the work. Everything was hand-breaded and battered. To me, it was like a Japanese tea ceremony. When it was busy, we cooked a full "stove," which was 4 chickens at a time: 8 legs, 8 thighs, 8 wings, and 8 breasts. The process was: * Flour, dip in batter, flour again. * Start with the legs because they take the longest to cook. * Continue until everything is in the fryer. Repeat, and repeat, and repeat. I would get lost in the work. You couldn't really rush things. I made sure everything was done by the book. Focusing on one task so intently that every concern, every worry just faded away. I knew people were watching me cook the chicken in this fishbowl, but I was so engrossed in my task that I didn’t care. All my stress and anxiety just faded. I still try to lose myself in my work, only now it’s not frying chicken-it’s adjusting spines. Now that I think about it, same situation. I’m “on stage” in my adjusting space with clients sitting in the waiting area. Sometimes, I get stressed when there are a lot of people waiting on me…but I’m gonna do my best work frying this chi… oops! I mean adjusting this spine. Zen teaching often emphasizes simplicity, mindfulness in daily activities, and the notion that enlightenment can be achieved in the ordinary moments of life. The phrase "chop wood, carry water" reflects this idea of finding the sacred in the mundane. I found my Zen. Find Yours. ❤️

Interoception and Mindfulness: The Path to Understanding Reality is Through Understanding the Self

We all live with our bodies every day, but do we truly experience them? Does this experience of the body have a broader consequence on our interpretation of life and our experience of well-being? The ability to experience the sensations of the body is known as interoception, and mindfulness meditation seems to be a powerful way of enhancing this ability. Enhanced interoception may not just result in a better understanding of the body, but may lead to a general increase in subjective well-being. Furthermore, it also may be indicative of a broader truth about how we can reach a more profound level of consciousness. In a previous post, I began an exploration into possible reasons why those who meditate claim to achieve an altered form of consciousness. I mentioned that across enlightenment-related research, there is a common experience and interpretation of being one with everything during these altered or heightened states. I proposed that this interpretation of reality was achieved through an improved capability of the brain to process incoming information. The argument stems from the idea that the brain is constantly receiving signals from internal and external stimuli, trying to interpret those signals using previous experiences and predicted models (Seth, 2013). The interpretation created, in part, manifests itself as our conscious reality. I used an analogy of a calm pond to describe a possible consequence of this neuroscientific idea: imagine the brain as this pond, where incoming signals can be thought of as raindrops. When a single raindrop falls upon a pond, the ripples created are distinct. It is incredibly easy to determine how big the raindrop was, where it dropped, and came from, etc. However, if there is a massive rainstorm, then it is almost impossible to interpret all the intersecting ripples, and it is very hard to understand the “information” of each raindrop. This is analogous to how our brains work. The busier the incoming signals, the more difficult it is to interpret the reality of what is happening. This would also be true for the signals within the brain manifested by our thoughts and ruminations. Therefore, the calmer the pond/brain, the clearer and more accurate understanding of our world, and ourselves, is achieved. Meditation may be a method to achieve this heightened state of awareness. I find this idea profoundly interesting, and so my goal is to further explore this idea using scientific evidence as support. To further explore and verify this idea, I felt it was important to research interoception. If this idea holds water, then it should be observed that meditation allows an individual to achieve a better understanding of incoming stimuli, both internal and external. In this post, I will explore the ability to interpret internal stimuli, which is known as interoception. A quick note before I continue: As I began researching this topic, I found that the study of interoception was quite complex. The research is constantly evolving, and previous notions are quickly dismissed as the research progresses. Therefore, much of the research presented is speculative, and surely not indicative of definitive truth. Nothing you ever read is definitive of course, but I find that this is especially true here. Regardless, it will adequately depict the fascinating nature of our bodies and the processes involved in interpreting ourselves and reality, hopefully highlighting how important interoception is, and how poorly it is understood. **Understanding the Different Senses** To begin, an outline of our body’s senses is required. Classically speaking, the senses are defined as teloreception (vision and hearing), proprioception (limb position), exteroception (touch), chemoreception (smell and taste), and interoception (sensations from the internal organs)(A. D. Craig, 2002). In this classical definition, sensations of pain, temperature, and itches belonged to the family of touch/exteroception (A. D. Craig, 2002). Therefore, the line between the stimuli from the outside world is clearly defined and separated from the stimuli coming from inside the body. However, more recent findings suggest that temperature, pain, and itch are distinct from touch because they are associated with different neuronal pathways, and the experiences of these sensations seem to rely upon post-processing (A. D. Craig, 2002, 2003). In other words, the experience of these stimuli is more related to the mind than pure touch is. Additionally, interoception is also being redefined. The lamina I spinothalamocortical system is one of the major neuronal pathways that provide the brain with interoceptive signals (A. D. Craig, 2002, 2003). This nerve, across multiple studies, has been shown to not just send signals regarding the organs, but a sense of the condition of the entire body as well (A. D. Craig, 2002). Therefore, interoception encompasses the general feelings we have about the body’s state of being including, but not limited to, thirst, hunger, penile stimulation, exercise/exhaustion, and the condition of our organs such as bladder, stomach, etc. (A. D. B. Craig, 2009). To further complicate things, some researchers have attempted to distinguish between different aspects of interoception (Garfinkel et al., 2015): • interoceptive accuracy – “Objective accuracy in detecting internal bodily sensations” • interoceptive sensibility – “Self-perceived dispositional tendency to be internally self-focused and interoceptively cognizant” • interoceptive awareness – “Metacognitive awareness of interoceptive accuracy” Here, the ability to accurately detect signals and the subjective belief of one’s accuracy is differentiated. The interoceptive awareness evaluates if your subjective confidence in your ability to sense the signals coincides with the true ability. Therefore, the mind and our subjective evaluation of our signals are incredibly related to our perceived understanding. For this reason, the neuroscience of interoception should be explored, to gain a better understanding of how it works. The two brain areas that are involved in interoception and that will be discussed here are: the insula and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). **Insula** The insula is located deep within the cerebral cortex, and likely plays the most important role in interoception. The insula, especially the anterior portion of the insula, is thought to be involved in bodily and emotional awareness (Giuliani et al., 2011). It plays a major role in interoception and the sensations of internal physical states (Fox et al., 2014; Wolf E. Mehling et al., 2012). Not only is it integral to generating mental images of the internal state, but it is required for the motivation to make reactions based upon the interpretation, which subsequently affect the quality of life and survival (Craig, 2002). Consequentially, it plays a predictive role in awareness and decision-making (Craig, 2009). Therefore, falling in line with the idea that consciousness is the product of the predictive model generating nature of the brain to understanding and interpret incoming stimuli, the insula is thought to be a major seat of human consciousness and awareness of self-hood (Craig, 2009; Fox et al., 2014; Seth, 2013). Already, there is a clear connection between interoception, body awareness, and consciousness within the scientific literature. **Anterior Cingulate Cortex (ACC)** The other brain region heavily involved in interoception is the ACC. Where the insula largely is involved in the processing of the signal, the ACC is more involved with the response to the signal (Craig, 2002). In other words, the insula is related to the limbic sensory cortex, whereas the ACC is associated with the limbic motor cortex (Craig, 2002). Most recent studies have also shown that the ACC and insula are co-activated when a person experiences feelings (Craig, 2002, 2009). For example, both brain regions are involved in the sensation of the intensity and unpleasantness of pain (Grant et al., 2011). This provides further evidence that interoception is both a feeling and a motivation (Craig, 2009). Additionally, this enhances the argument that our interpretations and feelings from our internal environment are there for survival. It supports the idea that our brain is organized in a way that makes predictions, generates a conscious experience, that then elicits a reaction for the continuation of life. **Meditation and Interoception** Interoception involves more than just sensory information. It influences our feelings, and our understanding of our body, self, and the surrounding world. This understanding and experience of the self are seemingly influenced by the practice of meditation. Not only is this idea espoused in the east, but recent research has also indicated that increased mindfulness is correlated with increase interoceptive awareness (de Jong et al., 2016; Farb et al., 2010; Hanley et al., 2017). The exact mechanisms to how this occurs are still unclear. However, fMRI studies have shown that mindfulness meditation seems to increase activation in the insula (Farb et al., 2010). This may indicate that mindfulness promotes neurogenesis in areas that promote interoception. On that same note, the cognitive practices of mindfulness meditation may promote a mental framework that is helpful towards interoception. Mindfulness meditation involves orienting one’s attention to their immediate experience and becoming aware of all incoming stimuli with an open, curious, non-reactive, and non-judgmental interpretation (Bishop et al., 2004). This process helps generate a feeling of safety within the body, and the individual learns to interpret thoughts not as concrete objects of reality, but simply as thoughts that come and go within the mind. Researchers have found evidence to suggest that the non-reactivity obtained through meditation practice is closely linked to the ability to sustain attention towards bodily sensations (Hanley et al., 2017). This concept closely links to the idea that the calmer the mind is, the better the brain can process incoming information. This article brings forward evidence that the brain, with a calmer mind, can process interoceptive information better. **Consciousness** An interesting observation amongst interoceptive research is that an increase in interoceptive awareness is negatively correlated with emotional distress, hence an increase in subjective well-being is achieved (Hanley et al., 2017; W E Mehling et al., 2012). This is further supported by the observation that sadness is correlated with decreased activation of the insula and ACC, the brain regions involved in interoception (Farb et al., 2010). The relationship between the ability to be aware of the internal signals of the body and our mental well-being is very interesting. It suggests that not only does a calm mind generate a greater ability to understand the inner body, but it generates a more positive orientation to said experience. Additionally, it may be possible that this positive outlook spills over into other aspects of life beyond the interpretation of the self. Perhaps the calmer mind generates an accurate and positive outlook on all information received. This is perhaps why those who are expert meditators seem to be so peaceful, loving, and have a feeling of unity amongst everything. The way we interpret information influences our experience of both ourselves and the world. Being aware of the body and its sensations in a non-judgmental way, creates a general sense of well-being. This may be indicative of a deeper philosophical idea: that the calmer the mind, the more capable the brain can interpret and understand information. This would not only provide a more accurate depiction of reality but provide a more profound understanding of it. Leading to a perspective of the world that is more positive, and potentially more oriented around the idea that we are all one. I cannot claim this is true. Nonetheless, it will be a concept that I will continue to explore. Regardless, it does seem to be the case that mindfulness meditation is capable of increasing interoception and therefore well-being. This being the case, I highly recommend that anyone interested in this topic incorporates mindfulness practice into their life. The Benefits of Qi Gong and Tai Chi

Presence is a crucial aspect of mental and physical health. This idea is not only espoused by religious teachers, but is slowly validated within scientific research. Much of this blog is devoted to exploring the scientific validation of mindfulness practices on health, in particular, the effect mindfulness meditation has on our physical and mental health. However, multiple techniques can help foster this holistic lifestyle. Yoga is a famous example in the west as another form of this practice. Of course, yoga was traditionally meditative, and the physical aspect of yoga is new in relative terms. Regardless, yoga is a physical version of meditation formulated in India. Another culture that developed practices to instill presence is rooted in China. Not only did the Chinese meditate, but they formed a physical exercise and martial art known as Qi Gong (气功, *qi gong*), and a similar practice to emerge later known as Tai Chi (太极拳, *tai ji quan*). These practices produce similar effects on health compared to yoga and meditation. Therefore, they are one of many methods one can utilize to find presence. Qi Gong is one of the most ancient forms of traditional Chinese medicine with a history of refinement of over 5000 years (Jahnke et al., 2010). The practice is composed of several martial art postures that are very fluid in motion. In the traditional sense, the purpose of these practices is to enhance one’s Qi (气). Tai Chi and Qi Gong are similar yet different. Tai Chi is typically more choreographed, lengthy, and more complex movements (Jahnke et al., 2010). Qi Gong, on the other hand, is simpler and easier to learn. Traditional instructions for both Qi Gong and Tai Chi are paraphrased as “mind the body and the breath, and then clear the mind to distill the Heavenly elixir within” (Jahnke et al., 2010). The intention of this post is not to fully elaborate on the philosophical implications of these words. However, note how the instructions here are almost identical to those of meditation practices. The practice intends to instill an awareness of the present body, which leads to a calm mind that cultivates an understanding of something heavenly within.  This idea shares a remarkable resemblance to the concept that meditation and the mind’s stillness create an altered characterized by a sense of unity of being with all of life, though there is no perfect term to describe this experience. Yet, this unity is likely the same thing as this “Heavenly elixir.” This experience has been clinically observed in meditators, psychedelic users, and those who experience religious moments.  It seems to be the experiential one of the by-products and intents of these Chinese practices. Outside of the more spiritual benefit, these practices manifest health benefits as well. Most research regarding these techniques focuses on Tai Chi. However, a literature review article noted that the Tai Chi used in academic settings is often simplified and more akin to Qi Gong (Jahnke et al., 2010). Therefore, Tai Chi and Qi Gong’s scientific literature will be considered the same here. For simplicity, I will refer to both as meditative martial arts. Meditative martial arts share many health-related benefits to traditional forms of exercise, despite being less strenuous. For example, a literature review found that despite the absence of weight-bearing activity, meditative martial arts retard bone loss and the occurrence of fractures (Jahnke et al., 2010). Additionally, these practices help improve knee health in older adults, even compared to traditional forms of exercise (Chen et al., 2016). Meditative martial arts are also comparable to other forms of exercise in reducing blood pressure (Jahnke et al., 2010). Other research also similarly shown yoga to be superior to regular exercise in certain regards (Ross & Thomas, 2010). This is not to say that the purely physical aspect of meditative martial arts or yoga is superior in all cases. Instead, it is the mental aspect incorporated that provides extra benefits. Meditative martial arts have been shown to decrease or modulate heart rate variability (HRV) (Jahnke et al., 2010; Lu & Kuo, 2003; Wei et al., 2016). This indicates increased parasympathetic nervous system activity in response to the aspects of the practice. Increased parasympathetic activity can provide a cascade of health benefits across the body and is likely the source of the extra help. Meditative martial arts have also been theorized to benefit the gut microbiome and immune function, likely via the same mechanism, making meditative martial arts much more than physical exercise or fancy movements, but a practice that cultivates holistic health. The idea that these meditative martial arts provide additional benefits, compared to traditional exercises that seem like the benefits of sitting meditation, brings to question the essence of these practices. It may seem odd that physical activity can induce benefits caused by sitting meditation because sitting meditation is, in part, aimed to generate mental stillness. Yet, optimal mental stillness seems impossible when one is mentally choreographing movements. This highlights the importance of not the mental stillness achieved by meditation, but the attention to the body’s sensations in the present moment. Both Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and even yoga involve the constant monitoring of the body’s sensations and position. The practice of this draws the individual’s attention to the present and experience of the present. This is a crucial aspect of all forms of meditation, including the sitting version.  Perhaps sitting meditations may provide a better opportunity for mental stillness, but this is not the only important aspect of mindfulness practice. For this reason, incorporating all these practices should be seen as the optimal path towards the goal. For one cannot be healthy by simply sitting, exercise is needed. At the same time, achieving great mental stillness will only heighten one’s practice beyond that gained merely by the meditative martial arts and yoga. There are multiple techniques and methods to practice mindfulness that provide significant benefits to health and well-being. Both the sitting and movement-oriented practices contain their pros and cons. Neither is all encompassing and perhaps they are only complete when together. For those seeking a lifestyle of mindfulness, interested in holistic health, and maybe even the obtainment of enlightenment, it is recommended that sitting meditation and meditative martial arts, or yoga, be incorporated within your daily practice. **References** Chen, Y. Meditation and Stress Resilience

Modern life, despite all our technology, can still feel challenging. Many of us work very long hours to make ends meet, burdened by stress that can dramatically affect our health. The internet provides us with a wealth of helpful knowledge but also bombards us with headlines that can make us uneasy about the state of the world. In short, life can feel very stressful. Sometimes, leaving it all behind and becoming a monk may seem like a perfect way to escape it all. Though this may work for some, this is simply not a practical thing to do for many of us. Many of us are here to stay. However, even though the stressful nature of society will not change for a very long time, it is possible to reorient one's perspective so that it feels less stressful. In other words, rather than needing to go to a temple to become a monk, one can learn to bring the monk mind here. It can be challenging to know where to begin to generate a positive outlook on life. So many people try to give advice, yet there never seems to be a "one size fits all" approach. We attempt to solve our outlooks by rationalizing the situation in a more positive way. Indeed, this can be useful for some, but not all. Furthermore, different people require different rationalizations. Regardless of advice, some are still stuck wondering how to have a better outlook on life. There is, of course, another method of perspective, and that is through non-judgment and simple acceptance. Mindfulness meditation is a method of training the mind to become calmer and more at peace. In the scientific community, meditation is defined as a method of self-regulation of attention to the present moment, involving adopting a particular orientation toward one's experiences characterized by curiosity, openness, acceptance, and non-judgmental (Bishop et al., 2004). The benefits of meditation are many; however, much more research is required to understand its benefits and mechanisms better. The most well-documented benefit of mindfulness meditation is its ability to alleviate stress and anxiety (Greeson et al., 2018; Petterson & Olson, 2017; Querstret et al., 2020). The method by which this occurs is still reasonably unclear, yet many researchers have developed psychological and physiological theories. Furthermore, meditation reduces stress and anxiety while also creating resilience (Chin et al., 2019; Hwang et al., 2018). So, not only does it seem to be a curative treatment, but a preventative one as well. Understanding how meditation creates stress resilience is crucial to understand why meditation is so beneficial to health—the lessons provided in the research share profound philosophical lessons for us to bear in mind. When studying meditation and its effects on the mind and body, it is essential to take a neuroscientific and psychological approach. The neuroscientific approach is valuable in both providing evidence that meditation impacts the body and sheds light on the mechanisms of action. A psychological perspective is also critical because it evaluates the mental schemas' effect on the body to better understand how the reader can practice this at home and in their daily lives. Both points of view will be discussed below. **Amygdala and ACC connectivity** The two brain areas that seem to be highly related to the process of resilience toward stress induced by mindfulness meditation are the amygdala and the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). The amygdala is found medial to the brain's temporal lobe and plays a vital role in emotional regulation and attention (Desbordes et al., 2012). For this reason, numerous studies have shown to be heavily involved in the experience of stress (Britton, 2006; Hölzel et al., 2009; Rubinow et al., 2016). It also influences the body in response to stress. For example, the amygdala regulates blood pressure in response to stressful stimuli (Saha, 2005). The role of the ACC is seemingly more complex than the amygdala. In general, it is involved in executing responses regarding incoming interoceptive signals (signals from within the body) (Craig, 2002). For this reason, it connects to the motor cortex of the brain (Craig, 2002). On this same note, the anterior portion of the amygdala, the more executive region, has been associated with regulating endocrine functions, conditioned learning responses, expressing internal states vocally, and maternal-infant interactions (Devinsky et al., 1995). The ACC is related mainly to the processing of internal stimuli, associating it with the practice of mindfulness meditation. Less clear is how it relates to the amygdala and resilience to stress. The neuroscientific observations of stress resilience are found within the connectivity between the amygdala and the ACC. In a randomized control trial involving a 3-day intensive mindfulness meditation program, researchers found that reduced stress following the practice was marked by decreased communication between the amygdala and the ACC (Taren et al., 2014). The study also noted reduced communication between the amygdala and ACC lessened HPA-axis activation (Taren et al., 2014). The HPA-axis is responsible for releasing hormones such as cortisol, which is a common biomarker for the activation of stress. This study is not alone in observing signs that mindfulness meditation reduces cortisol (Hoge et al., 2018). This is strong evidence that meditation induces physical changes within the brain, promoting resilience to biological responses to stress. The question is, how does this occur mentally, and how can we put this into practice? **Important Techniques within Meditation** The discussion and research surrounding how meditation leads to physical changes in the brain and body are complex and poorly understood. The appreciation for science in the west is new, and there is much research to be done. Regarding resilience, a randomized control trial also observed that the resilience created was both physical and mental (Hoge et al., 2018). Though the exact mechanism is not fully understood, there has been an effort to gain insight applicable to modern-day life. The research involving the mechanism at which meditation generates resilience towards stress is often pursued from a psychological point of view. To pursue this question, experiments involve different groups of people who are asked to perform similar tasks but differ in mental schemas practiced. The observed differences in health results indicate specific meditation techniques that are so helpful in generating resilience. For example, a randomized control trial in 2018 involved sending a group of participants to a temple (Hwang et al., 2018). One group was asked to participate in meditation sessions, while another group was asked to simply relax during this time at a peaceful place. The purpose was to discern whether or not the relaxing aspect of meditation was sufficient to produce resilience to stress or if something else was causing the change. The results found that both groups showed short-term benefits, but only the meditators had prolonged resilience towards stress months after the experiment. The results indicate that there was a mental practice involved through meditation that promoted stress resilience. A randomized control trial in 2019 expanded on this investigation by having one group of meditators purely practice the focused attention on the present, while the other group focused on the present while also cultivating a perspective of acceptance to all incoming stimuli (Chin et al., 2019). This study found that those who practiced a non-judgmental awareness showed a more significant reduction of stress than the attention group and the non-meditators, suggesting that the non-judgmental awareness of the present moment and experience was an essential aspect of stress resilience. Others have produced a similar theory on why meditation seems to be a healthy therapeutic method for those suffering from PTSD (Thompson & Waltz, 2010). The significance of these findings is not only crucial for those who have a meditation practice but anyone in general. **Be Non-Judgmental** A key aspect of meditation practice is to be mindful and aware of the present experience and interpret all thoughts, experiences, and stimuli in an accepting and non-judgemental manner. Not only is this important within the philosophical teachings, but it is a core aspect of how meditation works from a scientific point of view. This has profound implications for the importance of how we generate personal narratives. In meditation, one learns to let go of every incoming experience, no matter how tempting it is to value that thought or feeling. This is perhaps why the amygdala and ACC are involved. The amygdala is involved in emotions and stress, and the ACC is involved in "doing something about it." In meditation, no matter the feeling, thought, or stressor, one must cultivate an attitude of acceptance. One must simply continue sitting and focusing on the present. There is no evaluation, no judgment, simply acceptance. This article began with the idea that one can become resilient to stress and experience less of it by simply reorienting their perspective of modern stressors. It was also stated that there is seemingly no one answer for everyone. This may be because people often try to generate rational or schemas to help people think about events differently. This article argues a different approach: don't think, just accept, let go, and move on. This is easier said than done, of course, and by no means are the benefits of meditation best articulated through argument. It is best to be experienced first hand. Nonetheless, we are heavily burdened by the values we give to thoughts related to the stressors of modern-day life. We cannot avoid the stressors, but we can change their power over us. Preface - Mind Decentralised

In writing this book, I became acutely aware of my conditioning around able and unable. This book became my teacher. I realised that I started this book off as a way to feel more able - to be recognised by others as capable, intelligent and smart. I knew this because when I told people about this project, I got a buzz of excitement not from the work of writing but from how people perceived me as being an “author.” This slowly took hold of me. Writing became hard. I was blocked and started to dread the idea of writing further. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to discover this hamster wheel I was on and that I hadn’t seen for 50 years. I observed the thought pop in my head that “I should be writing the book,” and then the guilt and shame that followed. I watched and looked deeper at these emotions, following the smoke until I could see the flames. It took two months of observing, the longest a behaviour had stayed around for me. As the time passed, I could see the behaviour becoming more and more panicked, but I didn’t jump back on the hamster wheel. I just observed. Then one day on my balcony, I saw the unable and able pattern. It was everywhere, and it shocked me. I immediately felt immense grief and sadness. This was and is, for most, a behaviour conditioned from a very early age. It has driven me in every aspect of my life. Unpacking this discovering was one of the greatest reliefs of my life. As if now magnetically drawn to being able, that same day, I walked calmly into my office and finished the book. The way to be more able is not in striving but in watching how unable we truly are, and in seeing it, we dissolve it. As Snoop Dogg so eloquently said in a speech, “I would like to thank me for being me” and for spending the last 30 years looking for why I was so deeply insecure and not content, and why I had so much pain in my body. Throughout my career, I have always focused on results for myself and my clients. I was compulsively driven to be as able as possible, bringing with it the deepest unableness. However, from this journey I have discovered the greatest riches which I now share as a guide of others to become like me: masterless through a decentralised mind. The significance of my logo lies in its depiction of the ronin or warrior, symbolising the internal struggle we all must face to become masterless. To become truly masterless, one must first embrace decentralised money - bitcoin. In doing so, we can reject government control and central bank digital currencies, which enable control of our spending habits and imposition of fines if we do not obey their commands. Becoming masterless also requires decentralised health. For instance, if you do not want to take the next experimental drug that is coming, you must have decentralised your approach to your wellness, so that you do not succumb to the authority of the doctor or the pharmaceutical industry and you can make informed choices aligned with your values. Finally and most critically, we must cultivate and fortify our decentralised mind to free us from the incessant hamster wheel and experience lasting peace. With no external authority controlling us, especially not our minds, we are empowered to live life on our own terms. Only then can we become masterless. Layers of Becoming Masterless Imagine this figure represents the layers of becoming masterless. The bottom layer symbolised the soil. Akin to the foundational layer of bitcoin, it is slow and difficult to change. This is where Meditation OS and self-observation reside. They allow us to observe, and of our conditioning and see our internal prison. Through this awareness, we can initiate a revolution of the known within our minds. Moving up to the next layer, which is smaller, we encounter lightning meditation. Here, we find the activity monitor, helping us identify and switch off things that drain our systems. At the top, and smallest portion of the triad, lies exercise, food, water, and enjoyment of your way of life. Outside, we see nature’s code, electrical ones and zeros as in The Matrix. For example, the colour yellow1 signifies the sun, emphasising the need to embrace natural light because. Just as plants and animals do, we need to be energised by that life force emanating from the sun’s energy. These three essential elements show the path to becoming masterless and cultivating a decentralised mind. Navigating this triad allows us to experience peace and harmony within our bodies, maintain good health, and relish life’s pleasures while maximising our journey while we relish our heaven on earth. Jiu Jitsu and the Opponent

# **Encountering Ego** If you’ve ever stepped onto the mats of a Jiu Jitsu gym, you’ve likely heard the mantra, “Leave your ego at the door.” When I first started this martial art, this notion puzzled me. I embarked on this journey with the intentions to toughen up, to win, and to prove myself — all driven by ego. Perhaps you, too, entered this realm with similar aspirations: to get fit, to learn self-defense, or to compete — all motivated by ego. Whatever your reason for starting, there’s one certainty: you will confront your ego before, during, and after your journey. Your ego manifests in various forms — the exhilaration when you secure your first submission, the satisfaction of dominating an opponent in a roll, the complacency of rushing through techniques, or the inclination to stick to a familiar style. Conversely, it’s the voice that whispers doubts, telling you that you’re not good enough, that your opponent is inherently superior. It’s the pang of shame and helplessness when you’re effortlessly subdued. Your ego lurks whenever you feel either superior or inferior to another — it is your true opponent. # **The opponent is you.** It’s never your adversary that defeats you; rather, it’s your reactions to what they reveal within you. Each encounter exposes facets of yourself — testing your patience, highlighting deficiencies in technique, inflating your ego, or humbling you. Ultimately, your opponent imparts valuable lessons, and it’s your responsibility to internalize them. Winning or losing becomes secondary; the crux lies in acknowledging your missteps and pride. Detaching personal emotions and scrutinizing your performance pave the path to growth. True progress emerges from accepting your imperfections and vulnerabilities, relinquishing your ego, and venturing into uncharted territory. You’ll come to realize that what you thought you knew merely scratches the surface. In the depths of Jiu Jitsu, the fundamentals are anything but basic. So, heed the wisdom of the ages — leave your ego at the door, and witness how much further you can evolve.

Buddhism and Bitcoin

**Buddhism and Bitcoin** In the Bitcoin community, we often hear mantras like *stack sats; not your keys, not your coins, HFSP and get to 6.15, 1, or 0.1 BTC, and your financial salvation is assured.* But how can this focus on accumulation and tightly hodling onto wealth be reconciled with Buddhist principles, which emphasise renouncing the pursuit of wealth and embracing generosity as paths to liberation? What Bitcoiners recognise in the importance of getting a position is its potential for future growth and reward. Unlike the legacy financial system, which can be likened to a leaky vessel, Bitcoin is a holistic system—it expands as more value flows into it. Rather than sinking under a flood of printed money, your Bitcoin position rises with the tide. It’s easy to see why Bitcoiners place such importance on this, especially when the legacy financial system appears on the brink of collapse. Buddhism sees the world holistically as well, but in terms of consciousness or spirituality. In Buddhism, taking a position equates to living in accordance with ethical principles. These are not arbitrary rules laid down by a creator god, but rather guidelines for aligning one’s actions with the nature of reality to maximise spiritual growth and happiness. These principles are perhaps most famously and concisely presented in the Five Precepts: 1. Nonviolence 2. Not taking what is not freely given 3. Avoiding sexual misconduct 4. Avoiding false speech 5. Avoiding intoxication By aligning with these values and contributing to the world in these ways, you and those around you benefit. Due to the holistic and interconnected nature of reality described in Buddhism, you also benefit from what you give out. Parallels can be drawn with Bitcoin. There is often an altruistic element to hodling; many Bitcoiners believe strongly in the societal benefits that Bitcoin can bring: *Came for the number go up, stayed for the revolution.* While many are idealists or libertarians at heart. Bitcoin is a revolution from the ground up, a chance for the plebs to throw off their financial yokes and envisage a fairer and more prosperous world for all. By hodling they are staking what they have on this dream. Buddhism shares this vision too: a commonwealth of consciousness and a humanity with its own shared consensus on how to act, with the understanding that benefiting others also benefits yourself - a perfect alignment of incentives for a happier and more harmonious world. At this point, some may think of the Objectivist ideas of Ayn Rand, which are popular among Bitcoiners. These ideas emphasise that people must stand on their own two feet, that handouts and pity help no one, and that they ultimately undermine our societies, as evidenced by bloated and ineffectual welfare states. These ideas argue that welfare weakens people and misaligns natural incentives and morals. However, what I think Rand misses in her analysis is a concept found in Buddhism: seeing no clear distinction between self and other. This is a subtle but profound distinction. We are not pityingly throwing away our own resources to help someone undeserving; rather, in its best manifestations, we are extending our sense of self, where the flow of material goods (time and energy) is not the only currency. Moreover, we can give to ourselves too in this conception - we are equally important - and if we are not all benefiting, then we are not doing it right. This strikes at the chord of interconnection. Bitcoin has profoundly connected us economically, influencing various aspects of our lives, from how we perceive value to how we engage with communities. Looking over the Five Precepts above, I’m sure anyone who considers themselves a Bitcoiner can see many ways in which Bitcoin aligns with and supports these spiritual laws. Buddhism does not advise against ambition and drive, advocating a docile passivity. Rather, it cautions against seeking satisfaction in the wrong ways. We are all familiar with the image of someone overly consumed with ambition in one area to the detriment of their health, relationships, and enjoyment of life. In a sense, it is less about what you do and more about how you do it and what your underlying motivations are. Are you seeking wealth and status for their own sake, or are you looking to build a strong team, solve vital problems, and win together? Bitcoin has perhaps the most positive, egalitarian, and hopeful global community in the world. However, I think what is lacking in our community is the opportunity to connect on a more human or spiritual level. Bitcoin has given us prosperity, peace, and sovereignty, but we also need to connect as living or even spiritual beings. In fact, it is in times of peace and abundance that culture of a higher order can emerge. It might be said there are other things we can stack: friendship, quality communication, giving back to our communities, time out from the noise and hustle of society, peace of mind. Having a strong social network and community that you are plugged into may arguably provide more security in times of distress and need than being an isolated *anon* sitting on a large stack. What’s more, we don’t have to choose between the two—we can have both. Ultimately, we might find more meaning in the mantra: *stay humble and stack sats.*
